What's with the hair flipping girls?

I've noticed a lot lately that a lot of girls seem to like to flip their hair around or stroke it etc. it's always one or two girls in class each semester who always does it. Then BAM this semester first day in class 5 girls sat around my table and all of them starts either playing with their hair or flipping it around every 30 seconds lol... it's rather distracting seeing this wave of hair going side to side when I'm trying to concentrate on the lecturer, especially the one sitting right in front of me.

Is there like a new craze or something, or is it one of those things that all the stars of Hollywood are doing so all the girls are starting to copy it? Does it even serve any purpose? Just curious cause I wouldn't know why you'd need to flip your hair since I'm a guy with short hair.

Its something to do and is more than likely a boredom thing- you are sitting, spacing out and need something to do with your hands. Some people sit on them, place them between their legs and others, especially girls, play with their hair. Most girls aren't even totally aware that they do it.

Its also a subconcous thing to do when flirting- its called preening and holds an evolutionary purpose so that when we come in contact with someone we want to "mate" with, we will try and look our best.

i have no hair to flip,mine is really short. but my explanation is this:one girl flips her hair,to attract attention or just cause it's bothering her or something,and then other girls think she's ''bragging'' so they start flipping too,and then you have a f***ing wave of hair drowning you.

OMG that's so f***ing annoying. I always notice some girls just CANNOT keep their hands off their hair. I understand if a girl is talking with a guy she likes, she may play with her hair and it's a sign that she's interested (don't remember why). But when they just sit there and do it..I can never understand why. I have long hair and I'll touch it maybe..once every hour/hour and a half..and that's me pushing my bangs out of my eyes lol. It's one of my pet peeves.

Girls do it when they like a guy because it's a nervous tick. Most of the time, women are doing something with their hands..whether it's working with them or just plain playing with something i.e. playing with the hair. It's just a nervous tick, he's making her nervous

I play with my hair because it gives me something to fiddle with when I am listening to the teacher or whoever is talking. I only fip it though when I have side bangs because they tend to get in my face and it annoys me.

i would always play with my hair during class.my hair has been quite long for quite a while and I love it and its entertaining to braid and run my fingers through, though I never really would flip it lol

lol yea I remember back in schooldays getting hair flipped in my face a few times, smelt like a bubble bath but getting a loose hair in your mouth ain't that nice at all... especially when it's not your own...

I don't flip my hair but when I get bored and have nothing else to do I sometimes just twirl it or braid it.

like during an exam I would play with my braid--it helps me think :P
