Looking to start growing a beard, what's the best way to?

Well this is pretty simple.

I'm looking to grow a beard, I'm turning 21 in about a week and all I have is just a bit on my chin but it's patchy, some colour, but my upper lip looks pretty eh.

What's the best way to work with this?

Is say if it's patchy then leave it for now, wait until you get more even stubble then let it grow. You can get vitamins to make your hair grow faster but I don't know if these work or not.
