Does God allow the devil to oppose us so we grow spiritually stronger?

I believe God might send the devil or satan to resist you to make you stronger, like I was denied respect because a person in leadership over me would tell lies about me and try to turn people against me with lies, out of jealousy I was more intelligent than them, and it took months or years for them to get fired from their job and replaced with somebody better then them.
