Trending & News The first and last time I saw a therapist I explained why I was there and then she asked about my family life and past relationship experiences. They usually don't go too deep the first time. They kind of just ask surface level questions and let you be as personal as you feel comfortable with. They also kind of gauge how at risk you may be. Since pretty much everything was fine in the family and relationship areas for me we just kind of sat there until she asked if the discussion helped. I lied and later decided not to come back. What I learned from that experience is therapist are really helpful when their expertise match with your problem. Otherwise it's going to feel unproductive and awkward. My ex girlfriend has benefitted a ton from regularly seeing that very same therapist. So it's all really dependent on whether or not you're compatible with your therapist. I can say you get out of the experience what you give. So generally the more willing you are to open up and be honest the more helpful therapy feels.
Yes they are but what you get out of counseling is directly proportional to the honesty you put in it. If they ask how often you masturbates you tell them. There's a reason they ask everything. In this case sex is a normal part of everyday life and if you're not at least masturbating they want to know why. Since you've already made your mind up you're not going to be 100% open then you might as well not go.
Okay yeah I don't mind opening up. I am not afraid. lol I just want them to really help me so I can get a job and interact with other people my age. I need to find something to do with other... I get really lonely. I am so use to begin alone I just don't even try anymore and I can't afford to join a club or something. Going out by myself is depressing.
Yes they are very helpful. Sometimes people need support and encouragement from a professional
My father was a Psychiatrist and he dedicated his life to funding , discovering new treatmends , and providing ongoing treatments/therapies to his patients. He helped many people to regain their life back and changed their outlook on life, so their lives could become more enriched. Therefore, they could be happier within themselves.
The therapy will be tailor-made just for you as every patient is unique with different needs. You don't have to do or say anything you don't want to. The therapist will guide so don't just go to the session and take it from there.
Therapists are there to help you as best they can so being open and honest will be more beneficial to you. They can only provide the right therapy for you if they get to know you , they can then get to the root cause of why you feel the way you do etc
Good luck 🍏🍎👑
welcoem ! :)
welcome ** lol
I have been to a therapists a few times. The only times it worked was when i was more open to talking and discussing everything.
Don't feel bad about talking about anything. At then end of the day they want to help, they chose the profession and they would have heard a lot of different things on the scale from small issues to major.
At 20 it can seem strange to be talking to a therapists but i have found now at 26 that a lot of people i know have talked to therapists -all for varying reasons. Its not strange it's a smart thing to do.
At the end of your day your mum will want you to feel happy. She would rather you tell the therapist than bottle things up for years :D
hope it went well.
my last piece of advice is it is often hard to find the right therapists for you. It took me 4 different people but it was 100000000% worth it.

Yes, they are extremely helpful. I've been going to one for many months. The point of going to one is to speak to someone about a problem, and if that problem means you're going to start crying then go ahead and cry. They're there to help you through things like that. Be honest and try to get to the heart of whatever it is that's bothering you, otherwise they can't do their job and help you. And if you do feel like not talking about a subject at that particular moment, don't feel the need to. They want to provide a safe place for you to talk and figure out what's troubling you.
My mom is a psychiatrist which is basically a therapist but she is also allowed to diagnose and prescribe people medicine. I think they are really effective and don't feel embarrassed going to a therapist. My mom talks to people who threaten to carry out school shootings. She once told me about a guy who wanted to kill 8 people at random with a chainsaw so she is grateful when a person with anxiety, suicidical tendencies, or depression comes in. The first session is going to focus on getting to know you so I encourage you to open up because what you put into this is what you get out of it.
Yes, they are helpful. If you need to go to a therapist and are open to it, the idea of talking of issues you might have, It will help. Otherwise it won't really make any difference. He probably won't ask you something specific. He will be like, so what troubles you lately? And you will open up at one point. It's more like talking to yourself in a safe environment. Therapists usually use the maieutic method where they ask you expected questions to lead you to the right outcome. You will realise the truth you always knew deep inside. It should work like this.
When you go through something you have some thoughts about it. Like you think what you should do, what you have to do , or how you should deal withsomething. Usually really deep inside you know what's right for you and what you should do. By using questions he will help you find that inner thoughts you have and let you decide yourself.

To the second I've never liked zombie docs and they've never been helpful.
really depends on the type of therapists. different therapists have different approaches. but you should expect to be asked personal questions. it's really the way they get to the root of any issues
i do think therapists can be helpful. but it depends on the therapist and how much you work with them
i've only been to a therapist once in my life, after my parents got divorced they thought it may be a good idea, and kind of enjoyed it. like you I had no problem talking to the person. i liked sort of just being able to unload my thoughts on a 3rd party in a way i might not with people that i know personally. she didn't really give me any advice but did give me suggestions on feelings that might arise. she said she didn't think i needed to come back unless i wanted to. i would certainly sit down with a therapist again if i felt i needed/wanted to
Yes they are.
I'm seeing one now. And you should talk to your therapist about whatever is troubling you. You should do it with your mom first, and then later sessions alone so you can be free to open up honestly.
If you're not honest with the therapist... you shouldn't go.
Take the lead from the therapist. The first session is usually a "getting-to-know-each-other" session. Just general chat about you, about your school life, hobbies atc. it's a trust building time. They should not go straight into deep sexual and psychological analysis for some while. Once you can trust the therapist, you will be able to open up more easily. This is about YOU, so say exactly how things are.
Good luck with it. I'm starting something similar on 2nd March. We can swap notes!
It's natural to be scared of the unknown a bit. Remember, for every problem there IS a solution. Sometimes there are so many "what-ifs" that we can't figure out which is the right solution. You'll have to walk the road yourself. Nobody can do it for you. But there are many people who will take your hand and guide you through the bad bits.
You stand as much chance as the next person. The secret about getting a job instead of other people is to do your homework on the business you're going to. Find out as much as you can before an interview. Make sure your CV is as good or better than anyone elses.
There are jobs out there. It takes a positive mind-set to get one quickly. It's not "if I never get", but rather "I may not get the first, but there'll be a second and third and..." Just keep trying!
You're 20, so your sessions are completely private. No one will know what you talk about.
If you don't end up crying you're probably not talking about the things that are really bothering you. I frequently cry during a session because I'm talking about things tjat huet.
Unless you're there to address issues between you and your mom, she should not be in the session. Therapists aren't there to judge you, they're there to listen to you and help you. You should expect to talk about personal things, and if the therapist is any good, they'll know how to ease you into it.
My therapsits asked me personal question about my friends and stuff, and like whether I hear voices, or have tried too kill myself or cut myself, I pretty much just didn't answer any questions, and at one point I walked out, but my dad made me go back in, I hate therapists for some reason by the way, dunno why, I guess it's cuz someone I don't know is asking about my personal life, and I don't really think they help, but I guess in certain situations they can help
I only went once, because for some reason, my principle at my school, thought I needed to go to a therapist, I still haven't figured out why, that was before I developed Depression, so I don't know why
Yeah, so why are you going to a therapist
You don't have to tell me if you don't want
That doesn't seem like a reason to go to a thereapist, I need to go to one, cuz I hate myself, have thought about suicide a few times, and I feel like everything bad that happens to people I care about is my fault, I think I'm a horrible person, and Have cut myself once, but thereapists kinda scare me, so yeah
haha! You would think i am normal. But I'm completely not. At your age I hear voice out of stress I felt like everyone was watching me and laughing at me. My therapist even said I had exterme depression. So yesterday I went and I talk to dr. small again the doctor I had in HS. lol And she like your consider an adult and i believe you need thearpy. I mean she would have not suggested it if i didn't need it. The mistake i made was not telling my thearpist in HS everything.
I'm really bad at talking to people, like my friends I tell everything to, but I actually legitamaately have a phobia of adults I don't know, last time I was in a room with like 7 adults I dunno, I was crying, and had a hard time breathing
Hey Apple, i think it's good to give an opportunity to the therapist.
I run from people that tried to help me in the past, and... i dunno if i made the best option...
I think you can't avoid the cry moments... she will probably touch sensitive things, still it's her competence to make it less painfull day after day.
A therapist is there to ask personal questions and listen to what's troubling you. You can talk about rainbows and bunnies if you want, but that probably won't help you and your depression. If you cry, you cry. It's not a problem, and you're definitely not the only one to have cried around him or her. Just be as open and honest as you can. You'll be fine.
I think they are beneficial in the sense that they are trained to observe certain things and have an unobstructed view of the situation. They can see things we can't see, and their judgement is not clouded like friends and family members would be.
Overall, I think they can be of benefit to get things out of people that they tend to hide and really should talk about. I think they try to help you personally grow and mature. So I don't think seeing a therapist is a bad thing!
some are some are not, the firsst time dont expect much but the key is be open and honest. except in 2 ways never say you want to hurt your self or someone else. that will get you a 30 day trip to a ward
Nope! I didn't do it because I wanted them to care. I was so sad so tired. I did nothing but cry everyday and when I finally got a break from my own life it was like I was free. Like I didn't have to be in my suitation anymore. I wasn't alone anymore I had other girls to talk about my feeling and to laugh about. I said it careless to my adviser but she told police and it was a huge drama. I lost my support when I turn 18 because I have free medical insurance and I couldn't afford it so I am reapplying and i have to meet them today. I much better than those time but it still holds me back even after 2-3 years.
@reptocarl as someone who has grown up around it have you ever seen someone get put in a unit for just saying the want to hit someone or just because you were upset with your self over doing something stupid. well i have seen it were someone get more mest up getting commited than they were before they went. let alone all the drugs they put you on. if someone want to hurt them selves or others there's not much you can do.
@reptocarl what ever you think. i have my option and you have yours. i grew up with with my mom trying to kill herself 3 time in high school and her 2 rounds going threw etc treatments. then because my mom also has problems my dad had a brake down and tried to leave the house before he lost it. she would not let him leave and ended up getting arrested and court ordered in to a ward and anger management. along with domestic abuse of the mentally ill. and all he was trying to do was leave. his life has never been the same after that. this happened 5 years ago
You are 20. You have the right to not have your mother in there with you. And therapy is a safe place to discuss personal issues and to let out emotions. Just roll with it. They can be extremely helpful.
Yes, I'm a huge fan of therapy. I see a counselor for my low self esteem and it's immensely helpful.
When you go, you need to be 100% authentic. It'll be fine!
When I went to one it helped me. The first day should generally be just getting to know each other, kind of like an ice breaker of sorts. At least that's how it was for me.
I am suppose to being like my ID but all i have is a driver permeant? Do you think its enough? Also a statement letter. I wrote it already. And I am suppose to see if I qualify. I hope I do. I really lack motivation. I end up begin happy in general only to destroy my efforts once again. Its a bad pattern. lol (:
I have went to different therapists before. Therapists usually make the client comfortable. Even if they do ask you personal questions, don't worry because they will keep it a secret. They'll remain professional and won't react negatively to anything you have to tell them.
There is nothing to expect when going to a therapists, so just stay relaxed and don't be nervous. As for being helpful, it really depends. Some therapists are more helpful than others.
They usually ask some standard questions about your mental health and why you are visiting them.
Because you usually have to fill in forms about the reason for your visit.
Therapist only reason for existence is to discuss personal issues. That's how they help you. And yes, the y are helpful. But not if you don't open up.
Well it's not a one and done event. Don't expect anything the first meeting except to both get to know each other, initially discuss your issues and feel comfortable together discussing. After that initial awkwardness, it's nice to have someone to talk to.
But open up, otherwise it's just. A waste of both your time. Your mom shouldn't be there in the room with you either.
You're going to a therapist for a reason. You need to at least be honest with yourself about what that reason is. Even if it's just an apple obsession. Lol.
Well, the therapist will help get to the root of why you failed out. You do know I was just having fun there with apples, right?
God for you. And good luck. I'd be interested to hear how it went.
Well your mother isn't supposed to be in the room when you talk to the therapist so she shouldn't know if you're crying or not. Just talk about whatever they ask.
use the first day as like an orientation, ask her questions about who she is, what her credentials are, has she done this long?
Make it like an interview of sorts.
I never found therapists to be helpful personally, especially since they're getting paid for it so it's not really clear wether they actually care or not. I usually just talk to the trainers at my gym about my problems, and talking to you isn't what they're getting paid for so you can be sure that they actually care. I'm at the gym 5 hours a day, 6 days a week, so there's none of that hassle about setting appointments. I think you should do that instead.
When I went at 16
I just cracked open my heart and said everything j couldn't say in front of my family
My problems with my dad and mom
My brother
School stuff
Depression over cerebral, palsy
Other family stuff
No. But in my case my situation didn't change
I still have cerebral palsy
No job
No car
I want my own home
If I had a job, car and apartment I think it'd help a lot
nope.
I have tried it once... meh...
my mum is my best therapist.
and of course sports.
how did it end up carmen?
I guess it depends on the reason you are seeing a therapist. For me I've been forced to see one and it didn't help me at all. It actually made things worse for me and just passed me off so I stopped going
Pissed *
what does your mom have to do with it. you are 20. the therapist is legally bound to confidentiality.
also it goes however you want it to go. its 'your' session. they work for you.
Therapy is very helpful. In fact, I think everyone should do it for a while.
To be honest, talk about what bothers you. If he or she is skillful, they'll be able to get something out of you and help. Just relax.
Good luck. ;)
They were helpful to me. They take their time and work at your pace and comfort level, but you will have to open eventually or you'll defeat the purpose of going.
Whatever you feel like, but if you can't help the therapist then they can't help you. Help them help you.
I'm walking proof that seeing a therapist or a psychologist can work.
They never made me talk about anything I wasn't comfortable with.
Well it sucks but you really need to talk about whats bothering you.
You feel like shit for a couple of days but then you feel better in the long run
Then A therapist will probably help.
If you really try to get at whats actually bothering you, in the long run it will be far better for you.
As I said you will probably feel like shit for a couple of days after talking about the things that really are bothering you and rather personel.
But in the end you will probably feel so much better.
Its worth it, trust me
Hey, Its the best option,
I know its not fun but once you really get going, You will feel so much better.
I say be completely open and transparent, when asked a question be FULLY open and don't hold anything back.
I went to one once I swear he had more problems then I did.
nope they are scum
jk jk i really dont know they could probably help with whatever it is though thats why they have a job :P
Talk about life, everything, your problems and they will listen and give you advice or something
And YES it is helpful!!
I was in depression once and it was so unfortunate that I didn't think of going to one, because it can really help out
In my experience if you do not know why you are going you will get nothing from it...
Just be cooperative. That's simply the best way to make progress. Crying is ok. Its perfectly fine. You're bound to do it sometime.
I think most male the-rapists are lecherous ninnies looking for insecure and vulnerable women to grope.
This made me lol
The ones you need to watch out for are the combined analyst-therapists, or:
vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/.../latest
Never been at a therapist, probably should have, and don't know if I could be honest and open with one (that is required for it to work).
In my case no. However in most others cases yes they are very helpful. You will cry and be unhappy, thats an essential part of therapy, there is no getting around that.
its only helpful and works if you are honest with your therapist and, if you take the advice he or she gives to you
You can talk a out whatever it is that you want to talk about. The therapist doesn't know what your personal issues are.
Yay! Good for you! I hope it went really well for you :)
therapy and psychiatry are nonsense.
ask him questions.
it's what i did.
