Did cigarettes change there toxin since the 1930?

So smoking causes cancer right but my grandpa smoked for 40 years of his life and drank every day and died at 93 so I'm wondering why ovously a lot of things have change since there 1930 and most likely Tabaco as well but was my grandpa just like a super human lucky as shit or could it be his life style beyond smoking and drinking or is my family just stronge my grandma lived with 1 long since she was 17 had tuberculosis twice she smoked for 40 years and died at 83
