Why do they add chemicals to tobacco / cigarettes?

I haven't the slightest clue, but it's not the amount of chemicals they add to the tobacco that's the worst part, it's the number of compounds that gets produced once it's all burned together. It's said that cigarettes have 250-600 ingredients added to them (I actually have a hard time believing there's that many), but they produce over 7,000 detectible chemical compounds once burned, as reported by many heart/lung and cancer societies. Isn't smoking great? 🚬🤢🤮🤮

it’s preservatives they put in there so they can sit all boxed up on a shelf and not go bad. Actual quality tobacco will mold or dry out/ go stale if it’s not kept properly. natural pipe tobacco isn’t all that bad for people in my opinion it’s cigarettes that are like the mcdonald’s of tobacco.

Tobacco already contains nicotine and a whole host of other chemicals that are released when burned. However this is true about any natural thing that you burn. Leaves, wood, etc. The difference is that you rarely inhale these things purposefully and frequently.
The main chemical that they add to tobacco is to make it continuously burn. You’ll notice that quite frequently cigars are lit smoked and go out before needing to be relight.

Natural tobacco does exist, especially from other countries, but it's much more expensive, such as Gauloises or Frontier. Mainstream growers use chemicals to enhance flavor, nicotine and keep pests away from the crops.

I understanding is that tobacco companies ad chemicals to tobacco to keep it burning when nobody's trying to inhale the smoke and also probably to make it even more addictive than it already is. Tobacco causes cancer and heart disease and it's basically a toxin. Don't smoke!

It's to keep people addicted to and and dying from it. It's the same thing processed food. Addictive and bad for you.
