Soooo the latest definition of "when the time comes" has apparently shifted back to 45 ("informed decision making with healthcare provider" between 40 and 44). I guess the newest guidelines are every year from 45-54 and then every two years after that.

Me personally though, I'm definitely going to keep going every year -- after I found out just how much the risk increases with height. It's a freakishly big increase (at my height the risk is something like 75% higher than for a woman of average height), and, honestly, I had no idea until the mammo tech just casually mentioned it.

Soooo yeah definitely going to keep gramming the mammies.

@BelleGirl21 yeah -- people don't realize how much of a liability height is, in terms of longevity. it's actually one of the single most costly risk factors of all. more on that in my opinion here:

Yes I knew about it for things like heart disease but I never thought about it for cancer and such. 😕

@BelleGirl21 It's kinda weird, I knew about it for absolutely everything *except* breast cancer lol.
I come from a family of all men (no mom, no sisters), and my brothers range from 6' to 6'6". Didn't know about the breast cancer, since there aren't any women in the immediate family ahah

@4465loveyou5577 Good thing you live in modern times when they can sequence that gene, though!
If I were you, I'd almost certainly choose to have a prophylactic mastectomy -- but my opinion is probably biased (as someone who was never happy with my natural breasts)

I don't expect them to be comfortable but I'm going to do it anyway. I'm probably going to be like my mother and require an ultrasound instead. Family history of dense breast tissue.

They have 3D mammograms and spectral mammography for women with dense breasts.

Also yeah they are uncomfortable but it really isn't any worse than getting your BP taken.

Yeah, they did something weird for her. They would send her for a normal mammogram, freak her out and then send her for a different kind of test. They did this every time until she got a new gyno who just ordered the second test instead.

Thankfully I wasn't sent for another test. They knew before hand that I was young so they used a 3D mammogram and because I was "large" on top of that they had to take two extra views of each breast.

It's important to have a good gynaecologist so they don't send you for superfluous tests that just make you scared. Is there a family history of breast cancer? I think you're still young to be getting mammograms.

Yeah, my mom had it when she was 36 and I also have the BRCA1 gene so I had to start getting bi-annual mammograms when I was 26.

It's also ironic because I've had so many girls say things like "OMG I'm soooo jealous I wish I had your boobs", "You got lucky when it comes to genetics" and "I would DIE to have boobs like yours" LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

We get them at the obligatory medical examinations at work and from a certain age, it is offered free of charge from the government.
