Do I have to see a psychiatrist to get anxiety meds?

A regular doctor can, and often does, prescribe anxiety medications for short durations of time. But many will also refer you to a psychiatrist if they feel a more extensive evaluation is necessary. Some will make a referral as a matter of routine. A counselor, unless they are also a licensed MD or PA, can not prescribe medications. They can, however, make recommendations to your MD.
