Lack of exercise, cheap subsidized empty calories, a culture of indulgence, too much "soul" and "comfort" food, etc.

It's worth noting that most of the US is not walker friendly, so the bulk of people drive (and, thus, lose a great exercise opportunity). In the rest of world, it's often the opposite: the majority of people walk or bike around, while the minority drive. That alone is a significant factor.

That's a huge stereotype, but systemically speaking our government allows the shit 99% of the rest of the world "bans" into our food. More sugar, and more non food substances are legally allowed to be sold as food here and it's destroying our health and well-being.

Lots of reasons.
It's ingrained in a lot of us from a young age to eat the unhealthy foods with no moderation. Out culture-fast food giants, cheap junk food because of subsidies on corn, wheat, and soy, cheap meat because of those subsidies, sedentary lifestyles.

I believe for the most part it's a stereotype, not all Americans just eat fatty foods and just keep gaining weight. Some of use exercise and have well balanced diets. But to answer your question... They are fat because they choose a unhealthy lifestyle.
