How can you get mental illnesses diagnosed?

I'm a psychology major and med student.
First you need to get blood work checked to rule out any physical abnormalities.
Then you'll have to schedule and appointment with a psychologist or psychiatrist. They will get detailed information on your symptoms and compare with your bloodwork in order to diagnose you for a specific illness.

I've had my blood checked before. No bad results came of it, though the tests weren't specifically for stuff related to mental illnesses.

I think I may have social anxiety and depression, however the depression seems to come and go. I seem relatively fine this past week.

Social anxiety is much more common this generation because of the modes of communication people have. They get nervous around people. Depression is interesting, because everyone dips into these stressful times. Do you sleep a lot? Think about suicide? Are you ever happy?

Thankfully, I have never considered suicide - I'm not that bad, though I can be reckless/careless at times. My social anxiety may also be partly due to growing up in a small community (about 2000 people) and being somewhat isolated. My sleep patterns are erratic - sometimes I can't get to sleep and sometimes I sleep too much. I suppose I'm happy sometimes, or at least content.

Do you workout? Do you have a hobby? Are you in school? Do you feel like your life has purpose

I do yoga, but I've seem to have lost interest in things that would usually interest me, including yoga.
I'm out of school, in the workforce now.

Nah man you don't have depression. You just need meaning in your life. Look, I say look into improving your life. Go back to school, find a hobby, do something that interests you. Through that, you'll make friends, maybe even a girlfriend

There is only one way to have a mental illness diagnosed.
Ask your general practitioner for a referral of a psychiatrist.
Only psychiatrists are qualified to diagnose mental illnesses.

Well, first things first, go see an endocrinologist and get your blood work checked for any hormone imbalances that could cause depression, anxiety, etc. The worst thing to do would be to get diagnosed with MDD and put on a depression medication when the real issue is hyperthyroidism.

Next step would be to get checked out by a psychiatrist which can involve surveys and just verbal questions.

A doctor or phsichatrist can diagnos mental health issues. Normally it will take a few visits to fully know.
