Are gym rats more vain & narcassistic than actual athletes?

Question

I've been around people of both sides of the spectrum
Gym rats who are only concerned with vanity & I've been to local MMA gyms where there's students of allsizes who are more worried about technique & form & tend to not care about their looks beyond their cardio for functional purposes

I'm in favor of the 2nd route

i think most gym rats at the gym i'm going to are narcissistic but there are few exceptions like me and a few others that are very humble. there's a annoying gym rat women that mostly rely on creatine to get big, and she is so annoying because she keeps trying to compare herself to other bodybuilders, and powerlifters in the gym. she always want to compare with me when busy. there were a few times i'm in the zone and high bar squatting 265 on my back-- her face was literally just a few inches away from touching my bar while she's flexing and posing next to me trying to compare her legs to mines every time. there were also one time when i was just done setting up for sumo deadlift, i was holding a deep breath, embracing my core, engaging my lats, and i just grabbed the bar about to deadlift the weights up and she just came up beside and behind me flexing her chest trying to compare my chest to her own and i'm like wow this bitch just completely screwed up my lift, ruined my mood, and i was so mad about it too because i was attempting a new PR when she did that, then i said "can you move? you're in the way." and then she went to where all the casuals are to show off to them.

Depends if you're there for your personal health or if you just want your body to look good... Wanting to look good isn't a bad thing really but personally I don't really care or want to hear about it so don't try to shove it in my face I'll just make fun of you for trying. Just like girls don't like being constantly bombarded by some commercialised ideal image lol half the time it's not even as hot as what just a regular girl who's naked in front of you will look anyways it's just marketing and psychology

Well, I've been a gym rat, and a athlete, and a professional certified personal trainer through NCCPT. Your right in one way but I think its a little judgmental. A gym rat like me cares about form, techniques and routeen. But I've noticed bulky guys have a reverse anorexia. Even though to others they look huge! To them, its hard to really tell a difference. I cared how I looked because I was my own advertisement.

Its rude to assume a bulky guy is vain and only cares how he looks, he maybe doing it because he was bullied, or for the ladies, or for health reasons. I personally dont like MMA guys, sorry but its called mixed martial arts, and they dont actually use martial arts techniques. Take the camp, i forget his name, the Irish dude, well he was the greatest but its all trash talk! And a mma style fighting. My point is, dont judge someone whos bulky without getting to know them.

I don't like how you word your thread title.. but you are correct about the difference between fitness gym folks and mma gym folks. Fitness... i am one of those guys that will look at myself in the mirror, my lifting form and watch how my muscles expand and contract. I also do zumba for cardio. I will watch my dancing form in the class mirror. When i did martial arts.. all different body types was there.. dudes didn't care how they looked or smelled.. lmao!! It was for learning how to take out your opponent regardless of shape or size.. much like what real life may present to you.

i couldnt agree more i honestly think they r more syphilis in greek methology but nothing better than doing the work to relieve stress and for the right reasons i started body building for 6 weeksago i did just to feel better it helped me a lot i got lots anger inside i go in litteraly on the verge of crying i go out happy and more confident and relaxed nothing helped me more i still eat in a terrible even my couch told me to change but i really dont care about how i look for now i just want to feel great idont want to be angry and cry i dont want to be sad so my goals r simple to get better emotinally

The reason why MMA don’t focus on building muscle is because it slows them down. Being bigger in MMA in a lot of cases hurts you more than being fit and fast. Athletes and “gym rats” are the same, one is cocky about their looks, one is cocky about their skills, but not every gym rat and athlete act like that.

I mean it varies but yes. It's like when you get into a good college you see many around you are so smart and it hunbles you.

Athetles know that there are people better than them or how much work it takes so they are humbled. Don't get me wrong some are douches but it seems like less overall.

I think in general, yes. The most vein and narcissistic people are most often the less deservedly so.

At the same time, I think it's a stigma that gym rats get because many do not actually fit that stereotype.

I'm fit and do my exercises at home. I find myself more picky when it comes to my taste in women I guess. If that makes me vain then probably, though my gym rat friend is definitely narcissistic looking at the mirror every time he sees one. I guess there's a spectrum of different levels of people who do physical activities

I haven't met too many "gym rats" who lacked goals. Goals are purpose. You may not be able to relate to their purpose, but that doesn't marginalize it by any means.

Yes. I look at myself in the mirror at the gym. Even if there's a hot girl doing squats in the most revealing clothes imaginable, I'll still look at myself in the mirror.
