When I wondered if I could swallow a malteser whole and I managed to with a few, then on one it went half down and wouldn't come back up, I started chocking for a like ten seconds and forced it back up. sh*t scary, what an idiot.

I asked people if they'd done it, I've just realised, I think I must have asked, have you swallowed a whole malteser? So they thought of chewing one and swallowing it all, and said yes. Or they just lied and said yes. Because I don't think many have tried it, most people can't swallow pills without a drink.

So I was just wondering if anyone has swallowed a malteser without chewing it first?

Yeah, I know I can do it. But there's variation in the size of a malteser, and so you can look at them first, and choose a smaller than average one, which is how I would do it.

I've never needed water to take pills either. Are you sure you didn't accidentally send the malteser down the narrower air-tube in the throat? Because that's what it sounds like to me. That would certainly cause a choking sensation.

The esophagus, is the tube which leads to the stomach; food goes down this pathway. It's about 1.5 inches wide. The trachea, is the opening air must pass through to get to the lungs. It's only about 1 inch wide.

If it goes down the tube to the stomach, and if it got stuck, the most you'd feel is a pain in the chest where the tube was stretched around the malteser. Very unpleasant, but not by itself a choking hazard. You will have noticed this before, most probably, when eating regular misshaped food, such as lumps of meat (which are not very stretchy). You don't always cut and chew meat into chunks smaller than a malteser before swallowing. Occasionally, you have probably eaten something which was too big, and you can feel it "sitting in your chest" as they say. They usually recommend sipping water, until it goes away.

Yeah, I know the pain feeling. Maybe it did go down the wrong whole, I don't know, but I couldn't breathe. Yeah they are different sizes, I think that was a bigger one. What happens to stuff under an inch? Can if go down your airway? That sounds weird, I guess you do cough it up though, like water or anything else. The airway doesn't have what is called Peristalsis action, which the food-way does. It means that the food tube is capable of massaging/pushing food down to the stomach. The air way doesn't do that. So anything solid can get on the lining of the air-tube, cause irritation, and hopefully be coughed up.
