Your body is a metabolic factory... it processes raw food, water and oxygen to produce nutrients chemically 'burnt' to release energy, caloric heat and spent waste and/or to store unburnt resources as fat deposits.
The ONLY way to 'lose' weight is to increase metabolic demand and/or decrease intake of material food calories. ALL ELSE is hypothetical.
Your friend is wrong. Calorie deficit is among the best, making sure that the calories you do have are healthy ones for you.
Running is a wonderful sport but will not always cause you to lose weight and sometimes has the opposite effect.
