Can I stop taking antibotics?

I had it prescribed for ear infection. Will end on Wednesday. However I had a broken knee injury on Friday. The amoxicilin has unpleasant side effects. I'm better now from it and don't feel any more ear infection symptoms

For starters I’m glad to hear you are feeling better & as for you although you are having side effects I would continue to take the antibiotics & feel free to call your doctor & ask if you can stop taking them as well. Just because you are feeling better doesn’t mean the infection is gone.

Don't stop taking the antibiotics before you run out just because you feel better!!! You're better off not taking it in the first place than stopping before you're done, as the bacteria can grow resistant to the antibiotics and can cause problems for you later in life. I can't stress this enough. Finish. The. Goddamn. Prescription.

I would stop taking it if I feel better because they do make you feel bad. If you ever need to take antibiotics again you can ask to avoid amoxicillin they normally have other options that might not have the side effects for you.

You should always take the complete regimen of antibiotics, don't stop when you feel better. The bacteria causing your discomfort may still be around, in small numbers, so you feel better, and it's important that you finish the prescription to wipe them all out.

Your doc should stipulate that even though you start to feel better, you should always take the whole prescription- as directed.

Nurse here. You must take the full regimen of antibiotics. If you don’t, what happens is, the bacterial infection will mutate to resist antibiotics and will require stronger antibiotics for a longer duration and frequency to get rid of. There is a reason your doctor prescribed them for a certain amount of time. Take them until they are done.

It depends, as others suggested there are situations when it's dangerous not to However it is very common that they're prescribed without any need and don't do anything the whole time. Most people that i know have had cases of taking antibiotics for less than half of the prescribed duration and all problems went away.

Also you could possible get reinfected with a super bug you created. just finish it ans let your doctor know about the side affects. also take probiotics via tablets or food. this will help revive your bodys gut flora and fauna

It is NEVER wise to stop taking your FULL course of antibiotics (usually 10 days).

I made the mistake of taking some antibiotics, but stopped. That was a mistake! I ended up with aggressive pneumonia. High fever, three days unconscious, two IV lines running 24/7, painful blood gas tests 3 times per day for a week. Hospitalized for a month in a foreign country. Doctor told me if I had waited another before going to the hospital, I would have died!

You should always finish your antibiotics. Just because you feel better doesn't mean that the infection is gone. If you don't finish them you could develop an antibiotic resistant infection. Most bacterial infections have a small population of antibiotic resilient bacterium. In the presence of antibiotics they can survive for a short time. If you keep taking the antibiotics they will eventually die out. However, if you stop too soon they will give rise to antibiotic resistant strains.

I'm sorry about your knee but... if you don't take the full regimen of antibiotics then you risk the bacteria not being killed off and coming back stronger, but having developed a resistance to the antibiotics. That's how you breed super bacteria.
Just take it all.

Should complete the antibiotics for the duration that was prescribed. It has been said that if you do not follow the instructions of the physician you may come down with a super infection where the body will not be able to handle if it comes back a second time. That's what I've been told by my doctor. Do whatever you want though.

if you stop too soon it can come back as a super bug and you will have to get very strong antibiotics injected. only 2 more days of side effects vs an overnight ER Stay. the choice is your's
