Should I get a copper IUD in case I'm ever violated?

There are free IUD clinics available in my college and you just have to book an appointment and show up if you have insurance. Not that I'm sexually active and have ever been to require an IUD, but I read a Reddit thread online after Roe v Wade leak where women were suggesting to have an IUD inside because you never know when you may get sexually assaulted and end up pregnant even if you are a virgin/abstinent, and it would be difficult to get an abortion.

That thread hasn't gotten out of my head and I was thinking since it costs me practically nothing, shouldn't it be worth it anyway? Abortions are free and easily accessible where I live so that is not a concern, but I feel like I don't even want to go through that to begin with, and copper IUDs are 98% effective.

Dont just "get an IUD" while removal is possible this is not a quick decision. Get a consultation appointment to learn about it before. As long as you have access to abortions in the worst cases, you shouldn't worry about getting pregnant from a sexual assault. That only applies to when abortions are not available.

If you decide to get an IUD, ask if they do it with anesthesia as the procedure can be extremly uncomfortable and rather painfull without.

Also keep in mind an IUD doesn't help against STDs. While you wrote you are not that sexually active keep in mind that if you have sex with someone get tested before or you a condom anyway.

I do have a non hormonal IUD and it was a great choice.

Totally up to you, I love my IUD which is not copper, due to the hormonal effects of stopping that time of the month. That alone is worth it to me.

A copper one would be a better alternative to a abortion later, prevention is always better than after attack clean up.

Ignore the people that say your letting fear rule your life, everyone takes actions to protect themselves. The simple act of locking a door, would be considered letting fear run those peoples lives.

Making such a decision out of fear seems to be letting fear run your life. While such sexual assault does happen, it is rare. And perhaps most significantly, hormonal birth control has drastic negative impacts on you. Ranging from increasing risks of breast and cervical cancer to changing what kind of men you find attractive.

I would speak to an ob/gyn first if possible, they can give you all the best information on what's right for you. Some family practice and internal medicine providers can as well ob/gyn's have more specialized training. Good luck with whatever you choose.

If you want to, yeah. But if your concern is about on the chance you’re violated and not as a regular form of birth control, why not just use plan b in the chance that happens? The coppper IUD does cause longer, heavier more painful 🩸

My periods are already pretty painful and heavy, so I feel like it won't make a huge difference if I get the IUD

It’s not fun, mine were pretty manageable and I’d never had to use a heating pad and rarely take ibuprofen until I got it. You might be better off researching the pill, I know it’s supposed to help with that

No need of UID if you are not sexually active because sometimes it causes complications. If have fear 😨 about sexual assault to prevent it there are many other options. Installing UID under the fear of sexual assault this is the meaning that you are preparing yourself for it.

Oh, I guess science has come a long way. I say do it then if it gives you a sense of security. Just how prevalent is rape though? Like that one in four stat says sexually assaulted knowing most people will assume that is rape, when they include things like being called a slut or that old my that gently touches your butt as he goes by you in the grocery store. I'm just saying... is it really that bad where you live? If you live in rape city where rape is a popular activity for the guys... then yeah, better safe than sorry. 🙏

Young lady that is something you should talk to your doctor about and maybe family if your close to them.. but in the end its up to you.. do you live in a high crime area of a city or are you just scared from reading this article.

My Ex-wife had a copper IUD. They're good. Initially, she was fitted incorrectly, and had some issues, but once it was placed properly it was very effective.
Just make sure it's fitted properly.

I think you're likely to have some problems with the IUD that you haven't contemplated as yet. I know it's not hormonal but it certainly can cause other issues. Talk to a health care provider before you do this please.

I don;t know. I had to add a couple of additional circuits in my house and I could not believe how much copper wire costs. The price of copper is just nuts.
