The correct answer is 56.

The phalanges are digital bones in the hands and feet. The thumbs and big toes have two phalanges while the other digits have three phalanges.

Each hand and foot has 14 phalanges (4*3 +1*2) so 2 hands and 2 feet make 2*2*14=56 phalanges.

Some people confuse phalanges with digits. Each finger and toe is a digit, 20 digits in all.

FYI, there are 206 bones in the body.
