It hurts so much i don't know if it does for everybody else cause it's nothing you really ask your friends about it would seem weird. It's the same when i'm swimming in pools at some hotel or bathhouse i always get red eyes that burn and blurry vision
Not sure about the exact chemical processes, but this should at least give you a rough idea.
Shampoo or any soap in general gets its cleaning properties from binding oils to water, which normaly wouldn't mix.
But you body contains lots of oils (or fat), every cell is covered by a membrane made from fat.
On your head the shampoo just washes away the outer cells, which are dead anyway, but in eyes or other super sensitive areas, the soap destroys the outer cell membrane killing of the cells which does cause irritation and pain.
In pools its different, but similiar result, the chlorine or saltwater also destroys the sensitive cells in your eyes.
This also triggers your tears, and more blood gets pumped into the eyes to repair the damage.

It is the chemicals in shampoo. Baby shampoo doesn’t burn your eyes. Now if they are red and bloodshot all bets are off.
