Needing shampoo to get rid of odors, unclogg the scalp, or clean the hair is caused by scalp infections.

When the scalp is healthy, water is all you need to clean it.

Humans are the only animals to use shampoo, yet many other species of mammals have thick, shiny, healthy hair/fur.

Well shampoo is harsh chemicals, there is no secret to doing it with your eyes open, its not supposed to be in your eyes. Or even on your scalp for that matter.

The valid answer is just don't use it at all.

If you have a scalp infection, use a medicated shampoo given by a doctor for an appropriate period of time to kill it, then go back to just rinsing with water once per week at most, your hair will be healthier, smell better, won't knot up or be too dry or too greasy or frizzy, etc. Provided you don't sleep in hot dry environments or do something else to mess it up.
