A few days ago, the supermarkets were filled with pumpkins, mostly the poor eating kind grown for Halloween. A field I drive past was chock full of them with a sign up to pick your own. Most of them are still there.
We bitch about rising food costs and food shortages yet waste valuable land growing a crop that mostly goes unsold and ends up rotting in landfill.
Now I like pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, and roasted pumpkin chunks, but it's not a big part of my diet or anyone else's here. Millions are destined to simply rot or as animal fodder.
So isn't it time we went back to good old turnips? Even if they're not sold for jack o lanterns they can sit in the shop until sold for Sunday dinner or made into a nice winter soup. Everyone loves turnip, no one eats pumpkins.
Nah. Pumpkins turn a profit for farmers. People enjoy carving jack o'lanterns and putting them on display. It's a fun American tradition. They have lots of seeds that are good for roasting and are delicious. And the pumpkins that are discarded after Halloween make good animal fodder or compost.
So, just because we don't eat the flesh of decorative pumpkins, they are not a waist.
Pumpkin is like squash both where really common side dishes for various meals. But they fell out of favor. To me its kind of weird that both did. Because once you know how to cook them and know what kind dishes they pair with ya can find yourself eating more of both. So rather then banning them I think more people should learn to cook pumpkin.
Halloween pumpkins are not eatable. Only the small little miniature, type pumpkins that you eat for pumpkin pie. I’ve been told this before by educated people that know what they’re talking about

And they are correct. The small varieties have firmer flesh that doesn't turn watery
Yay finally they are the good pumpkins to eat yummy yummy yum. 😋
@purplepoppy Majority of the pumpkin is just used for waste as outdoor decoration.
Saves farming time and food.
Yes it generates profit but not food.
Small amount is just used in food.
Sorry...
I would buy pumpkins if I knew where to find them. They are very nutritious.
No, why? You can eat them, or you can use them for Halloween decoration...
No they are a staple of the American cultural experience
No we shouldn't.
