How should you react when someone tells you they might have a serious illness?

Today during a casual conversation someone told me that they are supposed to do a test that is to confirm whether or not he/she Has a serious illness that they might suffer from for the rest of their life. I didn't really know what to do so I just sat there and listened to as much as this person wanted to say and when he/she changed the subject I moved on. I'm wondering if there is something I should have done differently or if there is something I should do for this person?

It was always comforting when someone would say to me "Now, if there's anything, anything at all that you need, please let me know".

Did IT actually matter if this person was a close friend or just someone you knew? I'm asking because my relationship with that person is more 'business-like' and I don't really know if he/she would appreciate my concern or find IT burdensome.

I'm not quite sure how I should support this person. We know each other for some time, but we only meet for business related things. That's why I'm not sure if it's actually ok for me to even call and ask about how he/she is doing.
