I think it depends on his athletic goals. A distance runner benefits from relatively little mass, for example, to conserve energy. A sprinter benefits from a lot of mass in the lower body for explosive power but not as much in the upper body since a lot of mass in the upper body would contribute mostly dead weight to the motion. A powerlifter might benefit from a lot of mass everywhere.
Enough to where he's functionally strong enough to do many tasks with ease & bonus points if he looks aesthetic.
