I've smelled a lot of dead bodies. I think putrid is the best word to describe it. Dead animals smell different. I think there is something ingrained by evolution for humans smelling a dead human. Give it 3 days in hot sun and a dead body can get positively ripe. In that time, maggots have time to hatch and can number in the thousands. Bacteria are rampant.
