
Why is it so comfortable to sleep on mattresses placed directly on the floor?


I've come to believe that softness on top of something really hard it the best way to go. If you have too much depth to your softness, then your body just sinks deeper and deeper, creating a bad alignment of your body. If the softness is just deep enough to allow the heavier points of your body to not feel the hardness below them, then your body can keep a good alignment.
Ignoring the physical side we naturally want to get off the ground to sleep. Bedrooms are nearly always upstairs, beds are raised off the ground. It's a primordial instinct from our ape like ancestors who like modern apes slept in trees.
Yes, especially in the summer months. It's uncomfortable in winter, but even sleeping directly on the floor in summer is very nice because it's cool.
