Unless you live on high ground you'll rarely experience really cold weather in the UK. In some areas it might get down to about minus 5°C most winters or twice that in a really bad year. In other parts it's rare to get anything bar a touch of frost.
But that doesn't stop us bitching about how cold it is. Now I've been told people who live in places where minus 30°C is the winter norm don't feel the cold as much as we do because it's a dry cold compared to our high humidity cold.
Now is that true or is it just bollocks? Are we just soft or do you people have blubber?
If you live in a very cold place do you feel the cold?
I lived and worked in Cleveland, Ohio for a year. Cleveland is right on Lake Erie, which means that it can get Lake Effect snow. While I was there, we had a 5 day run where the daily HIGH was -13F, or -25C. The low was around 20 degrees less than that.
If you bundled up and were just walking a couple of blocks down the street, or to and from a car, it was completely fine. Cold, but not a big problem. But we were installing and servicing satellite TV systems, so we were getting snowed on (which melts and gets your clothes wet), and some things you just can't do with gloves on, and we often had to clear several feet of snow and ice off a roof to work. In those temperatures, it could legitimately be dangerous. And it wasn't healthy to keep going in and out when the temperature difference was 80 degrees or more.
So it really depends on the context. Going to the store was a little uncomfortable and inconvenient. Doing hard work was dangerous, painful, and could affect your long-term health even if you were okay in the short term.
I appreciate California weather. It's the middle of January and it's 63F or 17C. I don't even need a jacket.
There is definitely conditioning that comes with being very cold routinely. Having lived in a midwestern state with harsh winters most of my life, the California bay area is extremely mild in the winter by comparison. I’m still wearing shorts on most days and people always bring it up. Despite my blood thinning a bit, i still don’t feel like it’s terribly cold here. Sometimes i’ll wear long pants and a sweatshirt if it’s really chilly. Everyone else is in layers and proper winter coats. Ell oh ell!
It's all bollocks! I live in an area where it gets below 0 F frequently and I feel every dreaded degree of it whether I might have put on a couple extra Holiday pounds or not!😳
I'm usually wrapped in flannel all damned winter and will whine and fuss about the horrid cold well until spring and then some. I have to bundle up in 14 layers and a roll of fiberglass insulation just go feed the stoopid chickens. It ain't easy being me in winter. Is it spring yet?
We have crazy weather here in Kansas. Last week it was almost 70F, the other day it was down in the teens with lots of wind (lots of wind is pretty common here). But I definitely like warm weather, and get cold really easily. I'm also married to a man who likes to keep the temp in our place much like a meat locker, so I'm pretty well bundled inside.
ya, it's cold out but when you dress for it being outside is fine. Today it was only a couple 2 3 degrees below zero, F, the wind was maybe 20ish mph. I was outside shoveling, ran some errands and I'm thinking why am I getting so hot? Somehow, I pressed the button on my electric vest to full send, vs the low that I originally had it set on. I think our record low was 26 below zero F, and the coldest fire we responded to was about 20 below zero F. everything froze, you couldn't turn a hose line off, they would freeze to the street, a couple side streets were about 6 inches of ice, 1 guy was on the ladder, and he was there so long he froze to it. It was lots of fun. What a pain cleaning up after that one. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. But yes, I have heard that about the dry cold being easier to tolerate.
I have been in very cold and very hot areas this past year. It was so easy to get up into the Washington Monument without a reserved ticket days in advance. We just walked up because the 5C weather chased everyone away. I had been in the deep south with 17F which we felt.
I grew up in cold weather but if i spend too much time in hotter areas I get cold easier but I do revert back once in colder climates. In hotter areas I am cold at 60F. In colder areas I wear a Tee Shirt in the low 40s F. It is fascinating to me at times.
I mean, I guess I feel the cold but, I like it. I love cold weather. I hate hot humid weather. But yes, I think there is something to the idea that a wet clammy 38F (3.33C) rain will suck heat out of your body faster than a bone dry 18F (-7.78 C) atmosphere. The other determining factor is wind. Windchill plays a huge role in heat loss for a human meat bag filled with water.
I grew up where it is always cold from November till the end on march into April. This morning it was minus 31C. The high this afternoon was up to about-21C. The cold didn't bother me much when I was younger. These days anything lower then about -15 is getting to cold.
I live in Fargo, ND. I've experienced -40 degrees. (fun fact- that's where Celsius and Fahrenheit line up). The high today was 5F (-15C) but there wasn't much wind today. I still walked from work to lunch without a hat (about two blocks) without getting chilled. I do have to go back outside to clear the snow off my drive and walk, and I'll add a hat to the mix for that. Yes, its cold, but I'm used to it.
It is the coldness per se, or the wet coldness? That is, freezing rains at -5C (23F for us Yanks) would be more miserable than a dry coldness at even lower temperatures?
We recently had a few chilly days in the morning. Less than 20 degrees celcius, believe it or not. It felt terribly cold to an extent that I dug out long sleeved clothing (in some remote area of my wardrobe) to secure my survival.
I lived in a cold place in winter and didn't often feel the cold, the real chill, for me, comes from moist air that chills and makes it feel colder and damper than otherwise.
