So I am a direct support professional for nonverbal adults, I help them with everyday life tasks. I work overnights and am able to sleep. I am considered a mandatory reporter.
Friday morning I heard the morning shiftady getting up one of the guys and I guess he was unsteady where she couldn't hold him up well. She didn't need help but she said she hurt her back.
When I came in for my shift Friday night I was helping him get ready for bed and noticed a 2 inch sized bruise on his chest. I felt so bad for him. The bruise was red, blue and purple it was bad. I immediately made an incident report and called the on call supervisor. I did the proper steps to report it. Now tonight (Saturday) It looks more discolored on his upper side.
But now I feel like this is gonna come back on me because I was the one who reported it. I hope they won't think it was from me, I also don't want to be accused of abuse cause that would be awful. I just reported it. I am so worried when it comes Monday that my actual supervisor is gonna call me and ask me what happened. All I did was report something that I seen. He transferred fine for me. It is a big bruise. Now I have to tell the new shift coming up what happened and I just am stressing out.
What do I do? Do I worry?

I don’t think that you are going to br in trouble for reporting an incident.
Now, I am no healthcare specialist but a bruise that gets colored that way would be a bruise that gets that kind of colors only a number of hours after it actually happens, probably way before the start of your shift.
Perhaps that the person directly before the start of your shift may get into trouble for not having reported it or perhaps even for having indirectly caused that bruise.
You did the right thing since you adhered to the regulation by reporting this bruise.
Relax, it's not your fault
He was up a lot tonight yelling out so I gave him some PRN meds for pain. I feel so bad for him. I hope he didn't break anything.
