Apparently In the US Hysterectomies or wandering womb surgeries, the removal of the ovaries, and clitoridectomies were regular operations by Physicians to treat hysterical or unmanageable behaviors.

The Women's Health movement in the 1970s stopped the widespread use of these operations and in 1980 the American Psychiatric Association ended this practice.

These operations were based on the Ancient Greek theory that a woman's uterus detached and floated around the body causing mental distress.
