What of the following you believe is tougher?

Personally I work for my father at his shop and I work over 12 hours every day I don't have time for me my salary is low and I want to quit but. I cant.

To work under your family company/shop etc

To work for a non family company/shop etc

Non-Family: Uncertainty of layoffs... Potential to be fired.. etc

Versus:

Family: More verbal Drama than actual penalties.. E.g. you'd be lectured about being late more often than actually being written up and/or held responsible.

I've worked both. I was with my dad since 15 yrs/old and was working there till about 18.. Couldn't stand working for him because I thought he was expecting too much from me. So I got out on my own with a local business and it was great for about 2 months.. Once the business started to improve, there was more demanded from me - just like what my dad had been doing, minus the leniency.. If I was late at my dads work from being out all night, I was bitched at.. Out in the real world, it almost feels like a threat even though they don't really do anything to you if your late often. I guess I'm used to my family being cold and trying to prepare me for life, and I don't really want to replace that with some wanna-be manager that believes he has a high place among society. Power hungry punks that just wanna play god = Manager. Then again, I've met some really awesome managers that led me into some grand leaps throughout my career - sadly I was too young to pursue my true potential before burning too many bridges. But I got a lot of experience from some of those great aspects. The real decision is having a steady dramatic job with family or having uncertainty out in the real world - it could go for the better or worse, but either way you can always control the outcome. If a job goes sour, you can always plan ahead additional options or try a new avenue, etc.

I kind of do both at the same time. I work for the company my uncle created (it's an incorporated company instead of a sole proprietorship like most small shops are) but don't work for him directly. It's a ~100 person company. In the long run, it wouldn't really matter if I quit but I do have more trust/responsibility than I would at the same position in another company.

For your situation: have you tried talking to him and let him know you're at the age where you do need more time to yourself? Just curious, are you in the USA or a different country?

I would say to work under your family would be tougher. I work for a family-run restaurant but I'm not a part of the family. One of my co-workers is the owner's nephew and another one is the owner's niece's sister-in-law. There are a few others from his family at the other location on the opposite side of town.

The good things about working for family are that you probably won't get fired and it's easy to get promoted. The bad things about it are that you have to deal with your relatives all the time, you might not get paid well or get decent hours, it's very awkward if you want to quit and if you do you can't use them as a work reference because you're related.

It's kind of bad to be non-related at a family owned place because it's very hard to get promoted. After all, who is going to hire some random schmuck over their own kid?

I think this depends entirely on the family, but I would have to say it's usually tougher to work under your family company/shop. I say this mainly because I have known a few people who have worked for their parents and the parents can be quite demanding of their own kids. I can understand though, the business is their's and they want their kids to excel because they will take it over some day.

On the other hand, I have known a few people who have worked for their parents and have had it be easy. The kids could come into work drunk, slack off and not get fired because it's their parent's company.

I haven't worked with family before but I have worked for a non family shop and...(I'm still under contract so I can't say much) but...yeah it's not all it's chalked up to be. Sometimes you work under people who you seem to have offended in a previous life.

Personally I went for B as I use to work for my family, but for past 8-9 years have worked outside of family business, and there is less control of what you can do or how to do things as you are abiding by some else's processes and policies as well as work ethics.

I worked for a family-owned marketing company, who sort of picked on the non-family employees. It was awful. However, the family members were expected to live and breathe the business 24/7, maybe that's why they picked on the non-related employees.
