Wonderful question, I've wondered this a lot, and I personally think that it's a sport.

A sport need not be physical, but it's more of a competition. What sets Chess apart from any "board game" is that it's competitive, you need to make tactical moves to defeat you opponent and not any tom, dick or harry can play it.

It requires a fair amount of practice to compete on a professional level.

Chess might not be considered much of a sport in the West, but here in India, it very much is a sport. Just like how you're taught to play ball when you're young, we're taught how to play chess at a young age, and you'd see many people taking up chess as a competitive sport and also many tournaments conducted. So is the case in Russia, China and Korea.

Chess is a game, but a sport? Not really.

Unless you want to define "sport" as an activity one participates in alone or in a group where they are judged or compete against others for the advancement in said activity." Then I guess it's a sport but not a very exciting one. I wouldn't pay to watch it be played.

No. It's good for exercising the mind but it is not an actual sport in my opinion.

A sport is normally a physical activity.

You can argue chess is a "mind sport". If you think it isn't competitive, doesn't require practice, or isn't skillful, just like a sport is, then you are plain ignorant (not implying you do). However chess is not a physical activity.

I used to be in a speed chess club at school and we used to go to competitions and stuff, for some it was a sport but for me it was always a game.

Of course not. The brain may considered a muscle yes but that does not qualify it as a sport. People watching at the mall would also then be considered a sport.

Its competitive for sure, but its still just a game. "Sport" implies there is athletic competition involved, whereas chess is solely a mental competition.
