Well if history has anything to say about it would be a steam engine on the grounds they were the first ones ever built.

  Yes I've got a master's degree in electrical engineering and 15 years of building amateur machinery in my spare time which is hardly ever these days. No I lived in finland for 3 years, I'm from germany.

  Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals 2nd edition John Heywood
  This taught me everything I needed to know fundamentally, then I get books to build upon specific knowledge and machine tools etc.

  No I haven't. I went straight to V engines as they perform well and are just far more interesting to me.

  Started off V6. Just spent most of my time building, repairing, modifying, testing, and sourcing the actual machine tools before I got anything actually built. You're going on a journey of discovery good luck to you.
