I don't think the people who hunt consider it a hobby.

I am not fond of hunting, but, at the same time, I can appreciate why a lot of people do it. I live in an exurb of Saint Louis MO. It's rather rural and certainly red state territory. The people here are not swimming in money. Food and fuel are not cheap and you have to drive a decent distance to get both. Hunting is a way to give your family a considerable amount of meat for free. When 80% ground beef is $5.00/lb, 50 pounds of lean healthy deer meat at that price is $250.00. 96% ground beef is about $8.00/l, so that would be $400.00. Deer meat (venison) is about 98.4% lean and you can get it processed for about $100 if you don't do it yourself. In the long-run, you save quite a bit of money on meat by hunting than buying from the store.

This webpage does a good explanation of it.

Cool, do what makes you happy.

My great grandfather was a hunter so, I say do what makes you happy & doesn’t harm others. If you have the right hunting licenses, follow your state’s guidelines, make sure you aren’t putting harm to fellow hunters nearby, etc. then enjoy & have your fun. Personally, not for me though I get the thrill and the sport of the activity.

Gets my husband out of the house for a few hours, fishing too. Dinner on the table.

American hunters differ from British hunter in that British hunters are generally killing what are called vermin such as foxes, badgers, rats, grey squirrels, minks. They aren't generally bringing home meat like deer, wild hog, wild ram, wild duck, wild turkey etc. It was a real culture shock for me, then storing the meat by smoking, salting or freezing.

    Unsustainable and stupid.
It only works as a hobby for some because most people in high population areas don't do it, and because most people don't understand local ecology enough to care when they collapse their local foodchain or alter their local environtment in severely detrimental ways.

We have farms for a reason, because the speed at which we consume is much faster than nature produces, so we produce these things faster in farms to compensate.

We are too good at hunting and there are too many humans for all if us hunting to not result in global ecocide.

However, if we stick to farming though for meats, hides, etc, and act as wildlife rangers and endagered species breeders instead of hunters, then humans are underpopulated, as we need a LOT more people on the field for those jobs.

For those of you who are going to mention that without hunting your deer (etc.) population explodes. Thats because a decent chunk (or all) of your local predatory wildlife is locally extinct, which causes its own ecological cascade effect that ruins the landscape's ability to regenerate everything sustainably.

Hunting as a hobby is a topic that elicits mixed opinions. For some, it represents a deep connection to nature, tradition, and self-reliance, often tied to wildlife conservation and sustainable practices. When done ethically, hunting can help manage wildlife populations and fund conservation efforts through licenses and fees.

However, others view it critically, especially when it involves trophy hunting or when animals are harmed unnecessarily. The ethical implications of hunting depend on factors like intent, respect for the environment, and adherence to regulations. Ultimately, the acceptability of hunting as a hobby depends on the individual's values, cultural context, and the balance between conservation and ethical treatment of animals.

I used to "hunt' with my father... and eventually it simply made me sick to think about killing anything for 'sport' or as a hobby. I think I gave it up when I was about 16 or 17.

We are not and HAVE not been for centuries, Hunter/Gatherers, and at one point in my mid teens:

killing a tiny fox cub while 'exterminating' a fox den, left me PERMANENTLY MARKED PSYCHOLOGICALLY, as something that I will never be able to forget or put out of my mind as long as I live. Hunting and killing animals as a 'hobby', HORRIBLE... as I have been there and SADLY done that

Rather lame, in this day and age - VR gives you a much better and safer experience!

Joking aside, these days, every dipshit with camo wear, a gun, and a dog thinks themselves "a hunter". So its a rather dubious "hobby" at best.

As for some people they look at hunting as a hobby & other people look at hunting as a sport. As for me I say if hunting is a sport give the deer a gun & let them shoot back.

On the other side of things a hobby is something you like to do on your free time & hunting like fishing could be a hobby.

As for me I have never gone hunting other than ghost hunting but when it come to food if I want food I just go to the supermarket.

    It's fine.
Many people do it to help supply thier families.
there is 1 member on our department that has never bought meat in a store.
they hunt, fish, trap, and have plenty for their family.
I do not hunt, but every deer that is shot is one less I might get with my truck.
This time of year is rut season, so there are a whole lot more car vs deer accidents.
They can total out a vehicle, not to mention cause a lot of injuries.

Well, are you getting something out of it? Meat or fur hunting is one thing, but killing something just for the "sport" of it I'm kinda iffy on. And killing the deer eating your crops isn't hunting, it's revenge.

I'm ok with it if there's a strategy, challenge or possiblity of failure. I pay no mind to the PETA people, vegans, whatevs. We're omnivores. We have stereoscopic eyes, multipurpose teeth, nails on fingers and opposable thumbs for a reason people. I respect your choice. Respect mine - I at least have biology behind my decision.

Wild deer meat taste good and it doesn't grow on trees and believe me or not, it's cheaper and makes much less effort to buy premium beef.

    Hunting is great.

I am not going to pretend humans are saints, I don't like liars, they tend to be two faced and still eat beef, pork and the rest.

We need to survive, so hunt away for all I care.

If you eat what you hunt, then I'm fine with it. But I'm not fine with 'Trophy' hunters who only go after big game to check it off their 'done that' list.

There's two things here. Just because it's a hobby doesn't mean you're out killing for thrill. If you process the meat and eat it then it's fine. It also helps control the numbers in the eco system.

I think it's fine as long as you humanely kill the animal and you eat it. If you let the carcass go to waste then that's not ok unless you are taking about invasive species.
