@SamIam96 I used to keep nearly all of them up in my bedroom on the 3rd floor but, thanks to my greedy ex-sisters, I lost my house and the collection's been in storage 2 miles from here for the past 6 years.
My stereo's nothing special. It's just what I could afford without getting cheap. I bought most of it in the mid `80's. A JVC 210 turntable, a JVC amp, I don't know the model. A Teac twin cassette deck that plays and records forwards and backwards and will play all 4 side of the tapes non-stop. About 15 years ago, I finally bought a nice but used Teac open reel deck. It's a 10" deck and also plays and records in both directions and will play them continuously! I can get about 13 hours of music onto one reel. It also came with a remote. About 20 years ago, I bought a Tascam CD recorder. For the most part, it still works but is a bit wonky so, I bought a new one about 10 years ago that'll also play and (I think) record MP3 CD's!!
11 years ago, I bought a used boom box so mom would have music to listen to since her fave radio station went all-talk! It has great sound, separate speakers and also plays radio. I'm told it CAN connect to a computer but, I tried and it kinda went nuts on me so, I never tried again. It has a 5-tray CD player that also plays MP3 CD's!! So, I went to the library many times and picked up loads of boxed sets of the kind of music mom would like and MP3'd all of them to burn to a set of 13 MP3 CD's so, she could listen to the entire collection in 7 days non-stop (if she wanted to) and never hear the same song twice.
I used to have dad's old stereo, a Toshiba that he bought in the late `60's, which I would mostly just use to play and record my 78's on/from.

As for cataloguing, I've always kept them in alphabetic order according to label. If I had more than one record on any given label, they'd go in numeric order according to the record numbers. That's how I did the 78's and 45's. With the albums, I did it the same way except that, if I had more than one album by a given artist, all of their records, in release/numeric order, would go together and then, the next record, numerically, would go after their last album. For instance, Apple: The Beatles had the first album so, all of theirs are together, the next artist was Mary Hopkin, I think, so, all of her stuff was next, then George Harrison, I think, so, all of his Apple releases were next, etc.. This way, I can keep all of any artist's records together in one spot instead of hunting through all of my Apple's to get them. If I want the earlier Beatles stuff, I go to either Capitol or Parlophone.
My CD's, I mostly keep in genre. As for my tapes, each time I'd buy or start using a new one, I'd assign it a number. Last count, I had at least 1000 cassettes, a few hundred open reels and maybe 300 or so VHS tapes. I never bothered cataloguing or assembling my DVD's. I just load them onto a bookshelf I built in relative genres.
Starting in the late `80's, when I had access to a computer, I started compiling a list of all of my records. I got all the albums and 45's done but, sadly, never got more than about 1/3 of the 78's done. I lost about 2000 of them when my evil bitch ex-sisters had me kicked out of MY house!! So, I'll never know what all I had except for the ones that got catalogued!! Thankfully, I archived a few hundred of them to cassette, I just hope I grabbed those when I was being kicked out!

@SamIam96 They're in a set of orange crates, at least 125 albums per crate and 26 crates.
I just remember which label each artist is on and, if I want something, I just go to that/those labels. The only cards I have are those tall white dividers you'd see in record stores and there's one for each letter of the alphabet.
A lot of my tapes are nearly half a century old and they've all held up pretty well, so far. I DID start switching to CD about 15 years ago because, when I first started archiving my 45's onto open reel tape, the only tape I could find and afford was from Radio Shack and, they were fine to record on except that they didn't capture all of the sound. You could easily tell the difference. After doing that for a decade or so, I decided to start copying them over to CD and, about 20:00 into the first one, there started to appear this faint squealing sound and, as the tape continued it got louder to the point where you could barely hear the music!! The oxide on the tape was melting onto the heads of the tape deck and solidifying there making that squealing noise as the tape ran across it. So, I did all that work for nothing!! Then, while being kicked out of my house, I wasn't allowed to have the time I needed to get everything so, those tapes got left behind!! Hundreds of dollars of tape and thousands of hours of hard work, GONE!!
So far, the only cassettes I've had any trouble with are the Memorex, Maxell and BASF. I only have 2 BASF and about 4 or 5 Maxell, maybe a few dozen Memorex. The TDK's, Fuji's and Sony's have given me no problem!! Even the cheaper tapes you could get 3 for a dollar have held up quite well, much better than those other three!!

So far, I don't know that ANY format is gonna last forever, per se. 78's are brittle and can break VERY easily, vinyl can warp, get scratchy and ware out, tape loses its oxide, in some cases or can stretch out or break, I've got a few DVD's that erased themselves after one or two plays so, I assume CD's could do the same and, hard drives and other digital storage can either decide not to work anymore, get erased/deleted/formatted or just die. What's left? So far, vinyl holds up the longest if you take care of it.
Yeah, I like 78's and first started archiving those to cassette in 1978 after I bought my first stereo tape deck.

The library of congress is struggling with the same preservation issues. I remember seeing something on one of their sites about the same issues you have. It would be a shame if your collection didn't survive the test of time.

@SamIam96 I know!! Who knows if I'LL survive the test of time!! I've been forced to waste the last 7 or 8 years of my life NOT working on the archiving or any of my other various recording projects!! I don't have my records or stereo gear here so, I can't do anything!
By the way, I also have a cylinder! And, I'm not sure if I still have it but, I also had an 80 rpm record.
It's an absolute sin all the stuff I lost 6 years ago after all those decades of collecting it, hopefully, to pass on to my kids, if I ever have any!! Not just my 78's but dad's, too as well as a lifetime's history and the house my family's been in since 1936!! Not counting the house and furnishings, I reckon I, personally, lost well over a million dollars worth of collectibles, things not many other people have!!
Every so often, usually during the fall and winter months, I love whipping out the 78's and listening to them!! Now, unless I still have those cassettes, I can't!
It also probably wouldn't last but, there SHOULD be a way to photograph the grooves on a record in such a way that another device can read them and reproduce the sound on them without even touching the surface.
