But have you ever grown a giant vegetable, either to win a prize or just for fun? I grew a 200lb pumpkin as a child, tiny by competitive standards but it made a brilliant Halloween lantern.

Yes. We somehow planted melon seeds in our yard, but not the typical North American or European kind, a Chinese variety called Kungwa, which is a place-holding term for hundreds of different varieties of melon. And for at least 3 years or more, we kept getting new melons in our yard that we did not plant, somehow the bees were pollinating new Chinese melons in our yard without us intentionally planting them, and that was great since they are very healthy and tasty. But this type of Chinese melon must be cooked, you cannot eat it raw. One melon would be enough for around 12 meals or more when cooked into pork dumplings.

No, but one of my customers was the winner of thr giant pumpkin contest at thr local county fair. I got some seeds from that pumpkin and I was going to grow a giant pumpkin with my father. Unfortunately he died before we had a chance to do it
