How do we respond to 'Happy New Year'?

Do you have any specific answer for someone that send you a Happy New Year message? Or do you just thanks him/her?

Why do people even bother? December is seen as the new year resolution planning month. January is when they say, all month long, what it is that they're going to do that year. Then February is when they bust open a brand new bottle of Jack Daniel's because they realize how stupid it was to come up with some "resolution".

You must’ve been a boy scout, preparing for the new year so early! Ell oh ell!
My go-to is “To you as well.”.
That said, there actually IS a “proper” response to “Top of the morning to you!”
Traditionally that response is “And the rest of the day to you!”
So now i’m wondering if there’s a “proper” traditional response to seasonal greetings.

I usually don't say happy new year because the year seems to go downhill as a result (Example: Covid)

So now I just say, "Thanks. We'll see how this year goes... hopefully better than last year."
