No- and when I found out about it, I was deeply disappointed in the mischief potential of modern children. The idea is that Santa is ALWAYS watching- if his operatives are out in plain sight, all you have to do is restrict your misbehavior to different rooms, or heck, just turn it around, and you'll get away clean.

  Parents put a fake elf up throughout the house and tell their kids the elf is watching for Santa to see if they are being good. Some do creatives things and move the elf around each night.

We did when my kids were little. I used to tell then the elf was going to rat them out to Santa Claus if they were bed. It really did not help much.
