If you read the Bible carefully, many FAITHFUL men had sex before or outside marriage.
E. g.
1) the famous Abraham had sex outside marriage when he fucked Hagar, rhus giving birth to Ishmael, the father of Islam.
2) Judah had sex with a prostitute Tamar and gave birth to Perez the forefather of Jesus.
3) King David infamous story with Bathsheba, impregnated her then murder her husband.
4) Solomon, OMG 1000 wives+concubines. Sure?
The list goes on until the New Testament where monogamy was made into Christian Law.
But hey, despite so, many proclaimed Christians also had sex outside wedlock.
Hence my Opinion is, such a "chastity" law is just to show off and for mind control.
Frankly, after much observation, many who advocate "no sex before marriage" are those who had regular sex life.
Hence "its ok, I'm not affected" kind of religious rule to control the next generation. As Jesus said "hypocrites"!
Most Helpful Opinions
- Children born outside of wedlock (marriage) were typically viewed as bastards. Because they could not claim either families name or wealthy and resources. This was well before DNA testing however.
- Because some girls would get pregnant by a guy but rush to marry him or another guy. In hopes to let the child have a decent future. While also not being viewed as an outcast.
- Also most men back in the day would not want to marry a non virgin girl. Because she was often viewed as tainted or damaged goods.
- Since this was before women could earn a decent wage to support themselves and their children. Without having a husband or family for help.
- Also sex between a man and a woman was viewed as a sacred interaction reserved only for married couples. With the primary focus being to have children. While almost never being about pleasure.
- Plus many families would arrange marriages for their children. To link their family together for things like wealthy, resources or social connections.
I thought about this a lot. 😂
I came to conclusion that the people at the top, royals were trying to breed different classes of people with different lineages with certain specific traits.
So therefore sex before marriage meant the chosen gene pool would possibly be contaminated.
Also when women have sex with multiple guys the DNA in future babies becomes stronger. So another aspect could be to reduce masculinity in men thus making them easier to dominate and take their wives and children from them.
One really big reason is to ensure that fathers stick around and help take care of the resultant baby, if there is one. Studies show that children with single parents are far more likely to develop mental illness, commit crimes, etc, so it turns out that religions REALLY had/have it right by wanting to ensure that each child has 2 parents.

It was mainly because hooking up without birth control was dangerous, particularly to the woman and the child.
If the woman ended up pregnant, and the man wasn't committed to raising the child with her, she or the child wouldn't survive. The only thing that makes a man want to commit to raising a child, most men anyway, is knowing that the child is his. Otherwise he might be working his hands to the bone to pass on another man's lineage. If she's hooking up with people, there's a chance it might not be his, and they didn't have DNA tests back then. Therefore in those cases a man would be likely to abandon her and the kid. Especially when there were no legal consequences.
The best way to convince men to stick around was to socially or legally enforce virginity until marriage, so that the man knew that he was the only one to have had sex with her, and therefore was probably the child's father. Of course cuckoldry still went on sometimes secretly, but these rules made it much less likely.
The marriage contract would also legally force the man to continue to provide for the woman, even in the case of divorce, especially if he was the one who abandoned the marriage since divorce was fault-based back then. Since it was fault-based, this also meant that a woman couldn't just up and leave for no reason and still be provided for with alimony as they can today either. It was also heavily stigmatised, so it was uncommon.
A lot of people think about these things mainly based on today's world, so they think it was all just silly, but there were very good reasons for those rules. And perhaps we'd see a lot less divorce, broken homes, fatherless children etc. If some of those hadn't been undone. The Bible does not provide a reason that relates to earthly concerns. We can speculate. In the time of Christ, a girl was a valuable commodity because a groom's family was required to pay a dower to the bride's family to acquire the right to marry her. If she was not a virgin, she was undesirable and could not command a dower. Her ability to find a husband was essentially destroyed and she would eventually become a social outcast. Protecting a girl's virginity maintained the social order and expectations of the society.
Realize that for most common people marriage was little more than a public declaration and tacit acceptance by the families. If you were both unmarried and had sex, the old testament basically says you're married now.
So essentially the rules were 'once you start having sex with someone, you stay with them'.
This may be linked to the fact that sex can trigger children. The above rule means fatherhood is relatively clear and fathers are expected to be around.
They weren't virgin obsessed, young widows used to be common and remarried relatively easily.Because if you get pregnant, the guy might not wanna raise it. The baby then grows up without a dad, gets mocked by everyone, and generally leads a bad life. But apparently, if you're married and then get pregnant, you're guaranteed a great family situation.
Because the rules for sin were being written at a time when girls were still considered the property of their father's, and they couldn't as easily trade off a daughter for some land or whatever if she had already banged half the town.
Always follow the money,.So I’m not going to go over the religious reasons but I sometimes think a lot of that was written to protect people especially women bc the world was such an awful place for women so being sexual before marriage put women at higher risk.
Most religions predate contraception, safe abortion, dna tests, state welfare and STD clinics. So in ye olde days a promiscuous woman might find herself pregnant by many possible fathers so not knowing whether they are her child's father its unlikely that any of these would be willing to stick around to support her and her child.
To put it plainly, I think it's simply this:
Sex is a beautiful creation, that was designed and intended to be used and enjoyed by two people, and between them only. Not to be shared by another Human besides them. If this is to be implimented, Marriage helps, since they are joined together in Matrimony, sealing them together. All the rules in the bible at their roots was made to control society. It was to prevent the spread of disease, not have kids out of wedlock which causes societal issues and in some cases you would trade your daughter for goods and a virgin was worth more.
Because back in the day women were property and the used ones were less desirable, so men made a rule where they all had to be "pure" or they'll burn in hell. The reason priests can't have kids is because the pope didn't want their land and property go to anyone other than the church. So people can join it but the money never leaves it.
To prevent mothers from getting stuck having to support and take care of babies by herself.
Either to preserve the patriarchy or to keep guys from pressuring girls to have sex when they didn’t want to
because you be giving your body away to someone who is likely not going to be the right one. The right person will wait for you. Any reason not to they are selfish and dont care about you.
Because I’m that culture people were getting married at 12 and 13 years old. An 11 year old having sex is wrong and separation from God
I don't know, why is anything a sin? I never quite understood the reasoning behind religious moral codes.
Lmfao bc Christians are wack and they place in importance in things that don’t matter
In OT times, basically, a "used" daughter could not fetch a good price for her father.
Yes, it was all about property.Because it means your marriage has a high chance to fail the more you do it.
Sex outside of marriage is likely to result in getting an STD; as well as getting a girl pregnant.
Yes. But we're all sinners anyways, so ehh... carry on :)
