I recently learnt that in the bible, God forbids sex before marriage. If that's the case, why is it so rampant amongst Christians today?
Christians are still humans. They still have struggles and can give in to temptations. Part of honoring God is making choices that honor him. We always have a choice, and Christian’s are not exempt. Paul talks in Corinthians about how (as Christians) the things we want to do we don’t do, and the things we don’t want to do, we do. He then points out that our only hope is to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and trust him for grace and strength.
The Christian calling is a VERY high calling. Perhaps the highest. We are called to do NOTHING out of selfishness (Philippians 2:3), to ALWAYS be COMPLETELY honest, to be givers more than receivers (one of the reasons we are called to tithe), to ALWAYS maintain self-control, to never slander or say mean things to our about other people, to NEVER complain, to rejoice amidst suffering, etc etc etc. As selfish, sinful humans, this is essentially impossible, hence our desperate need for Jesus and his grace. Sex outside of marriage is no different. Sex was/is intended to be between one man and one woman in the context of marriage, and anything aside from this is a violation of God’s standard and is an act of rebellion to Him. Like any other sin, sometimes Christians choose selfishness over purity (aka sex outside of marriage).
Because people only care about religion when it benefits them.
They're perfectly fine to sin in one way and then point fingers at those who do it differently.
I were raised Muslim (I left the religion years agothough) and I live in a Muslim area and people call me gay all the time and sometimes bring religion into it and I'm thinking 'yeah, when you're out there smoking joints with your boys, refusing to grow a beard, selling drugs, making love to some girl you aren't married to or doing it the 'halal' way by having a big, flashy wedding and still not being legally married until about 10 years later because you didn't sign the wedding papers then, that's okay?' All of those are forbidden according to the logic of them and still people care when it benefits them.
Everyone's different and I'm not trying to attack all religious people or certain types, FFS people need to stop being self--righteous dicks about their beliefs or acting as if someone can't live their lives, because of what your belief systems says, like if you don't want to have sex before marriage, cool, but I'm not Christian so those rules don't apply to me.
Because people aren’t perfect.
And if you’ve ever had sex, it’s not difficult to understand why someone would want to have sex.

It's harder being a Christian than anything else I know. In effect, we are to put aside our desires and negative emotions and have love and give of ourselves.
Because we fail... that's why.
Some people succeed especially if they are trained young, find relationship young and get married young. People wait for marriage now til after college and jobs and that is a long time to wait when hormones starting around 13 telling us what your mission is.
Living is a daily battle... to pickup your cross daily.
I made it to a ripe age, but gave up. Sorry God... Truth is, it wasn't God's issue, I'd have been married young and on a different path if I wasn't so screwed up. Took a long time to unravel the problems and heal the emotions, which is ongoing process of life. Thus again... pickup your cross daily.
You can't look to Christians as models, you have to look to a higher level. This why I don't like seeing Catholic and church structure... that's humans. There's noone between you and God/Christ in my opinion... if you believe in them.
Spiritually they are which is the whole point. But you interpret it as you wish.
The Bible has many rules, quite a few of them were made into god-inspired laws but are much closer to anthropological ideas to make a cohesive society for the Jews. The kosher proscriptions are one. Very similar to what the Moslems "halal" call. Among the rules in both religious traditions pork is not supposed to be eaten. It isn't because Allah and Jahveh had a director's level meeting. It is because people had seen that one could get ill if they had eaten undercooked pork. Both Jews and Moslems were predominantly a nomadic tribal people for much of their history. To flourish in a community like that certain customs were observed to keep the community intact. Many of these have little spiritual significance. Christianity became very adroit at this. One of the main reasons that Christianity eventually flourished is because they never changed the routine celebrations of the religions preceding theirs. Christmas is a pagan celebration of the days getting longer again. The previous pagan worshippers believed that it was due to an observance of this that caused the days to begin increasing in length again. Easter is a celebration of renewal also and was also in place in many spiritual traditions long before Christianity existed

For another, following from that, some believe that all they need to do is say "I love Jesus" and then they can do whatever the heck they want. First, there's not only seven "deadly" sins. Spiritually ANY unrepentant sin is deadly as it gets between us and God.
I'm a Christian - note, Christian not Catholic - and I struggle with sin on an hourly basis. More a second by second one really. I don't know anyone who doesn't if they're honest.
Any sexual activity outside of the biblical definition of marriage - one man born male and one woman born female - is fornication and therefore a sin. But Christ said if we just look at someone with sexual lust and do nothing, to God that's the same as sex.

But then holding anger in our hearts - the definition of unforgiveness - is equal to murder.

Why do so many Christians struggle in that area? Basically by being human.
That's not the point. We are all sinners, but we can constrain ourselves and some sin will lead to death not all sines.
Most sins can be forgiven but not all, and in other to make use of Jesus sacrifice we most act in accordance with his requirements.
The point is, most proclaimed Christians do not live in accordance with the requirements stipulated by Jesus himself.

@smølf actually the whole point of the Old Testament Law is to demonstrate that we can't constrain ourselves and that all sin leads to death.
Biblically there's only one unforgivable sin - Blaspheming the Holy Spirit. In Biblical studies this is simply not accepting the sacrifice of Christ through His death on the Cross and His Resurrection.
The only condition for Salvation is a repentant heart. Jesus told the thief on the cross next to His own that they would be together in Paradise that day. The only thing the thief had done by the time he died was repent and accept Christ's Sacrifice.
Jesus said if we love Him we'll keep His commandments. In the context of the original languages, keeping His commandments is a by-product of loving Him, not a prerequisite. So the ONLY "requirement" Jesus gave us was to Love Him - meaning in context to fully accept and embrace the sacrifice He made on our behalf.
Asker, your original question is the same one the Rich Young Ruler asked Jesus. The answer was simple: give up everything of your own you place your trust in and trust Jesus wholeheartedly instead. In the Gospel the young man goes away devastated by Christ's answer because he's put all his trust in his money and his own effort.
As a Christian I'm forgiven, not perfect. I'm being saved, daily, by continuously needing to repent of the ways in which I fall short.
Paul wrote in Romans that we have all sinned and fall short of God's target. His language is that used in archery at the time. To "sin" was to "miss the target". When he says we "fall short" it literally means our own efforts don't even reach the target. If we're aiming for the Gold (Glory) in the centre and none of our efforts even reach the card, it's irrelevant whether we fall short by an inch or a mile. A miss is a miss. But Jesus hits the Centre and offers us His scorecard instead of ours
I've been a Christian 37 years and was a church elder for several years - see Paul's comments on feeling foolish for sounding like I'm bragging.
There's a difference between deliberate and habitual sin. Adam's sin was deliberate. He wilfully disobeyed the only command God had given. Paul talks about us who are being saved - an ongoing, passive tense statement he made because of habitual sin. He wrote about knowing what he should do but not doing it and knowing what he shouldn't do but doing it anyway.
I'm not Paul. I figure if the guy who wrote over half the New Testament was confident in his redemption despite habitual sin - he described himself as the worst of all sinners - then I'm probably going to be ok.
ONLY Blaspheming the Holy Spirit is unforgivable. Scripture doesn't support your position (although pre-Lutheran catholicism did because they then could sell forgiveness)
Yes, Adam's sin was deliberate and a result of this deliberate sin, God banished him from the gardens of Eden and condemned him to a life of servitude and Labour on earth.

The Adam and Eve is meant to serve us a lesson to us to STAY away from sin. I don't know why people like to twist it for their own purposes and blatantly IGNORE the lesson.
I agree that deliberate sin is a different story altogether. That was actually the point I was going to make.
There is no excuse for deliberate sins, in particular sins mentioned in the Bible, that cause you not to enter into the Kingdom of God.
Born again Christians tend to have the habit of saying I can do whatever I want because God will forgive me no matter what because I'm saved. Then you can abuse children, rape, murder does whatever. It doesn't matter because you would be forgiven no matter what.
That, however, is not what the Bible teaches. In the Bible Jesus clearly teaches us that we have to act in accordance with our faith in order for Jesus's sacrifice to be in effect. And if we do deliberate sinning, then Jesus sacrificed won't help us because we are crucifying Jesus all over again.

Habitual sin is unconscious. There's a serious element of people who believe the "that was just back then" rhetoric and dismiss the idea of God's standards being unchanged over the last 2000 years.

The church has moved away from outright condemnation of any behaviour, no matter how blatantly ungodly it is. America chose a president married to an astrologer rather than giving Jimmy Carter a second term because Reagan convinced the Republicans he was more godly.

Most people know the bible prohibit homosexsual behaviour, but as you said, only sex between a husband and his wife (sigular not plural) is condoned.
The bible don't limits the sexsual activities within marriage but it is constrained to the two only.
Why is premarital sex any worse than any other sin they commit on a regular basis? No one is unable to sin. You've probably heard it said before that Christians are not perfect, they are just forgiven. You might also know that a person can be perfect and sin just once, and that one sin is your ticket to the sweat shop. You have to be perfect to get into Heaven on your own record.
Because the society we live in is far too oversexed and not enough people have cultivated a relationship with God. I was not raised in a church going family. It wasn't even till my late teens that I even attended church on a semi regular basis. And it wasn't till I was wel into being an adult that I understood the relevance of God in my life. So in short, what I'm saying is people are generally introduced to sex and it's importance before they are spiritually ready for it. Unfortunately their's a lot of people who'll never be spiritually ready for it.
Premarital sex isn't a deadly sin. Lust, however, IS- and how else are you going to avoid that, short of unsexing yourself? Avoiding lust by not having sex is like avoiding hunger by not eating.

Extra marital intercourse is not one of the seven. Sex with love is not lust. Hooking up and casual sex are.
Temptation and sexual urges can be very difficult to control sometimes and people fall short in that area of sex.
Now, a Christian can't habitually live in sin. That's not a genuine Christian.

Keep in mind why the Bible said that sex before marriage is a sin. Most people in that culture were Married before turning 17. So of course delaying sex in your early teens makes sense

To answer your question I was a virgin until I got to college at 17. When I had sex I felt like I sinned and I thought then I was going to go to hell. Ever felt like that?
But let me guess. After that, instead or repenting, you continued having premarital sex right?

Have I sinned? Yes. Was the sin big enough for me to feel like I will be condemned to hell? No.
Anyways irregardless, whatever sin I did, I repented for it... and never did it again. That's the opposite to what some Christians do. They feel guilt and then proceed to do the same thing again.
