Is a wedding ring really a requirement to get married?

Question

If I'm marrying the guy then it's really him I want. This might probably sound weird but is it really a requirement for the man to propose with a good or expensive ring?

If my future fiance insisted and still proceeded to buying the wedding ring on his free will, ok but having him would already be my ring. I'm spending my life with the person, dedicating my love to him, talking to him, not the object.

First time I gave like to a question. I asked a lot of people why they spend so much money on something useless when symbols can be bought for a fraction of the cost. Nobody could really give me a proper answer other than "tradition".
I prefer cheap rings, or to pick my symbols and rituals myself, even taking from fantasy books that seem to have good ideas. As an investment, coins are better. So this sounds like the jewellery lobby has infected the minds of so many people.
I see more value in a long and custom marriage wow as a symbol. That is how I would make the point that I'm not just going through the motions and doing what everyone else is doing, that I am in fact taking it seriously.

Wedding ring is an old tradition but wasn't common centuries ago. In medieval Europe women who were married had to cover their or to bind their hair. Wearing lose hair was only allowed to unmarried girls in the public. This is how women showed their marriage status. Most peasants and serves were too poor to get precious metal rings for their marriage ceremony. Silver and gold were in this time much more expensive because there was no technology to extract it from minerals like with electrolysis of chemical extraction.

If you watch "Say yes to the dress" on tv, you will realise that the dress, ring, wedding, reception etc are more important, to a lot of girls, than the guy himself. An engagement ring and wedding ring are not necessary, and can be a waste of a huge amount of money. Personally, I think marriage is a waste of time.

Technically all you need to do is sign papers at a courthouse to be married. Many religions and cultures use rings to symbolize the union. But legally I don't think they're necessary.

There is absolutely no requirement that you have a wedding ring; it is a tradition and not a requirement. Like all traditions, they should be honored unless doing so won't serve the purpose for the tradition.

Yes but not because of why you might think. For me it's not material value that matters. I can wear a ring made of wood. The engagement ring I bought sported a sapphire gem and sterling silver, not platinum or gold, or diamonds. It's made to show you are taken, to express your love for your partner, to show commitment and loyalty, that's what that band stands for, not for how much it's worth. Just my humble opinion. I will never buy a woman diamonds. Why? Too many are mined through horrible suffering of others. I prefer lab made stones that i know were obtained through ethical, non-harmful practices.

No. It's a tradition, stemming from a time when female virginity was seen as a financial, as well as social, asset. I know a woman who has a SERIOUS aversion to rings (possibly jewelry as a whole; I've never pried, but the idea seems to deeply upset her); when her boyfriend proposed to her, he instead had had a cluster of trees planted with a "[her name], will you marry me?" sign in front of them.

I think rings make no sense.

That being said, I think it would be cute to make my own as a gift and also to appease more old fashioned family members. That's the best compromise I can do.

When I make the ring, I wanna make it our of cooky or exotic materials. I don't envision it looking much like a traditional wedding ring.

Yes, that’s what I consider a security deposit along with other assets. He messes up (which he will because most people do) I’ll be cashing those in and collecting my money. It’d be stupid to go into something and having it end without me gaining anything aside from dealing with inconveniences and wasted time.

no, I used to own a jewelry store, and I had some couples use something other than a ring to show their love for each other.
As long as both parties are fine with it, it really doesn't matter.
I'm not sure if my niece and her husband wear wedding bands.

It makes me wonder why one even gets married if they dont care about any aspect of marriage... except they always seem to want the legal aspect. Just weird asf. Marriage is a public declaration of commitment to make a family unit. A ring is a great way to show off that one is married. Do you not want people to know?

I would like a ring yes but just something that looks nice rather than something that's big bulky or majorly expensive I've looked before and the ones that are 70-150 are perfectly nice, though I'd like the idea of a wooden one

Not at all. in my opinion it's pretty silly for a young man (or couple) to spend a lot of money on an ring. The whole diamond engagement rihg thing was started by the DeBeers diamond cartel.

My wife and I were saving for a house so buying a diamond engagement ring did not male a lot of sense. We did however buy gold wedding bands. This was 25 years ago before the price of gold got so crazy.

I always thought that the purpose of the engagement ring was in case he dies. You can then hawk the ring and support yourself as you grieve. That is why it is supposed to be 3 months salary.
