If marrage is not regulated by law, how does your widow prove that she was married to you so she can collect, e. g., your retirement benefits? How do you prove that you are divorced so your ex can't claim some entitlement to your estate when you die? How do you prove that you are entitled to the additional protection of property that is afforded to married couples?
