Why is so much emphasis put on proposals and the value of the ring, or who takes who's last name?

My parents never had a proposal. They just decided to get married and went with it. Marriage is a choice made together as a couple. Yes, proposals are cute and nice, but ultimately I think a simple, 1-on-1 proposal with a customised silver ring (stones are optional) is enough. Save the expenses for the wedding or the house!

Yeah it’s really just an IRS distinction. Anything else is just religous or ego with rings. But I’m that way with camera lenses, and other crap. We’re consumerists raised in a capitalist society. That’s what makes the world go round.
