The traditional way is the guy picks the engagement ring. Or a temporary ring and then later you pick the engagement ring. Either way you would pick the wedding ring. Women tend to want the wedding & engagement ring to be similar but wedding ring being more impressive.

When I asked my wife to marry me, it was a surprise. Sure we had discussed it in the past but she had no clue that she was getting asked that day or getting a ring. That's my style. Had she dropped hints about ring preferences then that would have factored into my choices some. But sometimes women are crazy... like just because your co-worker has a $500k ring doesn't mean you're getting one. ha ha ha ha.

I would just drop hints on how you want to approach the ring thing. Think him using say his grandma's ring (or similar) to pop the question and you pick the rings in the shop later works best for your situation. Otherwise you are totally skipping some of the tradition by the fact you picked the 1st ring in my opinion.

Well marriage IS a traditional thing so when people talk about how they don't believe in traditions BUT they want to get married, I think they're confused. The less traditional things are in the marriage the less likely it is to work out long term. Now when it comes to the ring situation, I'm not saying how you do it just has to be one way. What I'm saying is if it's going to be more traditional then the guy presents you with a ring you haven't seen before when he proposes. Then you got at least a LITTLE bit of a surprise. I gave examples of how that first ring might just be temporary. That's all. But if you don't care at all... why even have the guy propose, I guess. Personally, I went the traditional route. Very traditional.
