What would you think if your girlfriend suggested doing a prenuptial agreement before marriage where she wouldn't receive half your wealth?

A prenup should be a fair agreement that both partners agree to. The best prenup simply states that, in the unlikely event of a divorce, each partner gets to keep whatever they had before they married, and anything gained by either or both of them during the marriage gets split 50-50.

But the partners can agree to whatever they want... if she wants less than half of his assets should they get divorced, and they both agree to that, that would be a fine prenup.

Some people put what happens if one spouse dies in a prenup. That's wrong, that info belongs in a will, not a prenup. In many states in the US, a prenup has no special laws governing it, other than normal contract law, while wills have special laws that govern how wills are handled. Hint: don't put anything about death in a prenup.

@BlackBeauty90 To answer your question... A marriage is a partnership. Partners in business share the profits and losses equally, so should partners in a marriage. Most married couples file income taxes jointly, and they benefit together from that, equally sharing in it. Sharing martial assets equally is also the way most US states have divorce laws written, which take effect absent any other situations like a prenup might define.

@AviatorTom - partners contribute equally to a business there is no such thing as a partner doing 20% of the work and getting 50% of the profit. Never happened in the history of business and I'd know as seven different relatives own businesses. If a partner doesn't carry their weight they're bought out and kindly asked to leave... please let the door hit you on the way out.

Only in community property states do you get half of each other's wealth, and it's only wealth accumulated during the marriage. If one was wealthy before the marriage the other one doesn't share in that unless provided for by a pre-nup.

That’s a good idea, but you would have to get a lawyer to draw it up and it would need to be a lot more detailed than just that.

Yes, I think taking half of a man's assets isn't fair, especially if you're also working. Child support makes sense though

Ah OK! I think in the case of assets that a man has BEFORE getting married, I think those assets stay with him after a divorce. Regardless of a pre-nup. However it might vary state by state, and a pre-nup could help put it in writing and clarify it anyway, in the case of the guy getting married. You sound like a very fair person.

Also my son have stayed with me and she got kicked out with nothing, she can enjoy her life now, 9 years have passed, just turned the page with all it's pain and wounds, life has to go on, even if it has no meaning anymore 😏
