My response is that it depends on your income, because what a coal miner should spend is different from what a nestle CEO should spend on the wedding ring. You want to spend enough that your bride knows you plan on honouring her, but not so much that you have to skip lunch to pay for it.

I've bought wedding rings for as little as £3.50 if I count the Welsh silver one but talking in the more general gold category I can recall paying £20-£280 apiece but retail is much higher

Depends on your income. I would recommend spending 10-20% of your monthly income. But frankly, it shouldn't matter.
