Do you think an engagementring has to be a diamond?

Just curious. I've always had people say it has to be a diamond and $1000s of dollars. My boyfriend and I actually opted for a sapphire ring that was a lot cheaper than a thousand. But was exactly what I wanted. But is it breaking some sorta tradition to not go with a diamond?

The notion of an engagement ring having to be a diamond (the formalization of engagement rings at all, really) comes from De Beers, a company created to prove that the Dutch, too, could be evil (it's something they're not typically very good at). It's all about selling an item they've deliberately restricted the supply of to drive up the price.

A girl I know who isn't much for jewelry told me that when her then-boyfriend (now husband) proposed to her, he knew she wouldn't be much interested in a metal ring, so he had a ring of trees planted instead, with a sign posted nearby explaining it, to act as a symbol of their love for centuries after they were both gone.

To be honest, I gave my fiancé the deed to my home to let her know how serious I was. I think jewelry was chosen as a way to check whether your spose is cheating. You could hold hands, fingers interlocking, and cause the ring to slide enough to verify that the tan line is still there. I did get her a ring when she asked for it but she chose a modest one from Walmart. We did exchange bands. They were cheap silver. It's just a message to others after all. I hate to wear any jewelry including a watch.

No, I wanted a ruby for mine and got one. Diamonds are so cheap and generic because they are so common. They aren't even rare. People who want diamonds just fell for the marketing.

Girl, my dad proposed my mother with a bottle cap ring 36 years ago, and my mother's kept it to this day. An engagement ring can literally be ANYTHING at all as long as it's something thoughtful, genuine and has sweet memories surrounding it. The fact that ladies nowadays will get offended if it's anything but a diamond ring costing at least four figures makes me wonder if y'all truly want to get married with this person, or do you just want to show off to your gals

I gave a diamond and that is what I am most comfortable with. Princess Diana and now Princess Kate where Diana’s engagement rising which is mainly sapphire.

Well to be quite honest, thinking about it, I'd be more attracted to the girl who would tell me to keep the engagement ring less expensive and put that money on a bank saving account for our future.

Absolutely not. Any stone both prefer is fine. And diamonds can be added later after they have been married a while if they wish.
