Well, if you are in a very traditional family then that answer will probably be known already. I think that if you are NOT from a very traditional family then those questions are open for discussion with no established obligations.

I think part of the downside to less traditional relationships, marriages, and rules is that such traditions may also fade away. It would be very hard to shirk traditional aspects of marriage then expect others to adhere to them when it’s financially beneficial.

My example would be there was a time when a young man would be expected to ask a girls’ father for her hand in marriage. Fathers would equally be expected to fund most of the wedding. However, if a young man asked a girl to marry him without offering the tradition (and basic respect) of consulting the father first then I think he would have no standing to then ask (of expect) the father to pay for the wedding.

Who "should" pay for the wedding depends on the culture, whether it is a first marriage, and the age of the bride and groom. In the US, traditionally, the bride's family pays for everything except the rehearsal dinner, which is paid by the groom's family. Remember that in the US, there is no current custom of dowery.

I got married for the first time at age 32, I was a practicing attorney, and my fiancée's family were quite impecunious. I had no desire to seek financial assistance from either family, and my fiancée and I paid for everything.

I am getting married next month and I am paying/have paid for everything except $1,000 that my fiancée paid for part of the honeymoon lodging.

Interesting. Why does the family pay at all? When I got married I noticed that all the bills came to me. Sounds like a “white-privilege” concept to me.

Traditionally, the bride's family pays for the wedding and reception, and the groom's family pays for the rehearsal dinner and honeymoon.

In today's world, the couple getting married often pay for everything themselves.

In my opinion both the bride and groom should pay for their own wedding. That's what me and my husband did we're adults and have our own money I would feel ridiculous to ask my parents to pay me for whatever. However, when families insist in getting involved maybe is best if the expenses are equally divided by the bridal's parents and the groom's parents.
