I had long term girlfriends from the time I was 16. There was no transaction involved. We just liked each other, fell into infatuation, and enjoyed monogamous sex. I eventually moved on because I wasn't ready for marriage and wasn't interested in having kids.

It wasn't until my early 30s that I started thinking about finding a life-partner and settling down. By then, I had experienced most of what life had to offer as a free-spirited, single man without any responsibilities.

I had a couple more long term relationships in my mid-30s. One in particular was amazing, but it turned out that we couldn't be life-long partners. It broke my heart when we separated. I have never experienced such pain.

I met my (future) wife when I was 40. We had both lived very full and fulfilling lives before we met but neither of us had been married or had kids.

I married her when I was 42. She's 2.5 years younger. We've been happily married now for almost 28 years, have had a LOT of fun and built a wonderful life together.
I couldn't be happier.
I'd be lonely and miserable without my wonderful wife.
