I know multiple atheist couples that have problematic relationships because they have no personal sense of accountability leading them to either judge others by insanely harsh standards or for them to abuse their partner. I find the number one trait of secular thinking, and yes, religious people can also be heavily secular in their thinking, is harsh judgment towards others. People who judge cancer patients for their low grades instead of mentoring them in school on the weekends. This is the type of cruelty in many secular religious groups who say they love God but hate all the people who worship God.

I believe religion,(or lack of), can effect how we see this world more than enough to effect how we act in it. As a Christian I strive to be kind and open minded.

It can... however... I know a lot of professing Christians who act pretty horrible. I suppose it's about how they act with their beliefs? What they do with what they believe.

A lot of professing Christians that attend church every weekend and go to one or two studies in a week... show up, extend those arms and weep, crying out to God... and they have happily gone out of the service and within hours, have said some of the cruelest, nastiest things to me, completely unprovoked. I've had "devout Christian women" bragging about the boyfriend's dick size at lunch right after church, or giggling wondering what "the cute waiter was packing"... (if anyone says anything about Hey, this is a church group, or we shouldn't be talking about this in public, it's "DON'T YOU JUDGE US!") I think of them as "Three or four hour" Christians... people who know the lingo and play the game and have the fad down cold, You see them at bible studies and church and choir... but you'd never know they were Christian by the way they talk or what they do outside of church.

I've been cheated on by "devout Christian women." I've had "devout Christian girlfriends" brag about an ex's "size" when I never asked for (or wanted) that info.

And I know of a few Christian women who DON'T do any of that. They actually seem to LIVE as Christians. I've noticed that it seems like the ones who show the most drama tend to be the ones to happily stab someone in the back, spread rumors hours later... they have never cheated on anyone. They don't happily lead sinful lives for five or six days a week and then "do church" because it's just an obligation to hurry through... they mess up, sure... but they can apologize for it. And it's usually not something huge. And they call friends on their lives if they're not behaving with integrity. They're good people. They actually live like you'd hope the best Christians would. If more "Christians" were like them... well, we'd have MORE genuine Christians. And this world would look a LOT different.

A "typical" relationship / marriage to the first type of woman is probably a lot different from a "typical" relationship / marriage to the second. A relationship where ONE partner walks the walk is probably still different from one where both people are invested in the same way. There will be issues, no relationship is perfect... but it's also about how the partner forgives, IF they forgive, if they OFTEN forgive, or almost never... How they talk to and about each other... I think that changes things.

Sadly, the ones in church who are following the fad because it's at church can sometimes look like the genuine article. And if you only see them in church, you might get fooled... for a while. I think that the longer you get to know someone, the lazier they get about appearances, (and the more that there's "another life") that OTHER life starts to show through, verses the people who genuinely live that life full time...
