Why would a group of married women repeatedly insist a single guy join them over a period of 8 months?

So a guy friend was out with me one night. He walked over to talk to a married couple he knew and the wife asked who I was. My friend shot his mouth off about my background. And the wife literally went nuts asking him nonstop questions about me in front of her husband. To the point her husband got freaked out. Then she jumps up and announces "I'm gonna go meet him". Which she did. I knew something was up but was clueless about the details of their conversation about me.

Since then, their friend group of about 8 married and single women have been nonstop trying to bring me into their friend group when they are out alone without their husbands. Examples. They send their designated emissary over while I'm eating dinner. She says you're gonna come join us tonight. I say, not really my thing. She says, I know, I'll let you finish eating but I'm coming back and you're gonna join us. WTF?

Another time I'm eating again and my friend is on my right talking to the wife who had the meltdown and the other married one who they send to pressure me, LOL. I'm ignoring them and eating and my friend really awkwardly starts trying to bring me into their conversation. I really wasn't paying attention but he was obviously feeling really awkward. I relented (not much choice) after I finished eating and talked with them (finally). Afterwards I asked my buddy "WTF was that all about?" I thought it was his idea to include me. Nope he swears both of them were constantly pestering him to get me into the conversation.

It continues every time I see them. They'll buy me a drink. Chat me up. Get touchy... oooh is that sweater cashmere... runs her hand from my shoulder to my hand. Constantly trying to lock eyes even when their husbands are there.

I'm not stoooopid! I get what's going on. I just constantly deflect it.

What I don't get is what they expect me to do? Why would they do this? Bored housewives bar sports, LOL?

Happened to me twice. First girl was unhappy in their relationship and wanted to get out. Second girl I assume wanted to cuck her husband, or something? And yeah, it felt uncomfortable, especially the second scenario.

This is weirder I think. Two have pretty much let me know they want to do more than talk. The other 6 seem to be trying to help make it happen.

Yeah, that was mostly a joke. I'm pretty sure they are not swingers or polyamorous or open marriage types. Just weirdly fixated on me for some reason.

Nope! They buy me drinks in an attempt to get me to hang out long enough to have a conversation with me. I have literally never reciprocated and bought any of them a drink. Not gonna be guilted into just letting myself be absorbed into their social circle. I drive them nuts. They want to know about me and I keep them almost completely in the dark. Deflect their questions. Give them ambiguous answers. I get up and walk out spontaneously. OK, I guess that could be called flirting. It is fun just keeping them dangling. But what else is there to do? They're almost all married. And the 2 most aggressive ones are married.
