Why are so many women obsessed with diamond engagement rings and weddings?

Even when they aren't in a relationship or are with a guy who has no intention of marrying them. Is it just materialism or something else?

I always thought the marriage is the important part and the wedding second to it.

Because she needs to satisfy her hypergamy and show off her husband's wedding dowry, that is, the money and properties she will get by marrying him.

As opposed to the candy pop rings? It's just a traditional thing, I guess.

It *used* to be a ring passed from generation to generation in a family... and the stone wasn't really important. HOWEVER at some point it switched over to diamonds, which are symbolic of something lasting and tough... bc a marriage is supposed to be lasting, etc.

In TODAY's society it doesn't make much sense and just as we've ruined the significance of every other major term/movement/great gesture, we've now gotten TOO MANY options of rings... almost as many types of diamonds and settings as we have coffees... Blame the overly-entitled capitalist society.
