What does it mean that someone is "basically engaged"? Sounds like a cool out so they don't get asked about it again?

So my brother-in-law has been dating his girlfriend for a while like 11 years and apparently recently they "basically got engaged" and I'm guessing both of them felt pressured because my husband and me recently got married and well I assume that now he's doing it out of convenience but the thing is that my husband's family does not like this chick so I don't know how my in-law family is going to react once they find out I mean that's if it's that they are actually engaged but I feel like he's just doing it out of convenience just so she shuts up and I say that because he on multiple occasions has said that he does not believe in marriage and thinks it's stupid to get married like a waste of time and money knowing that his girl wants to get married

I know right and like the few times I've talked with him he gives off this energy like as if he's telling me to stop giving his girl any ideas like my brother-in-law seeing my husband and me getting married seems like it awoke something or made her desire for marriage resurface which is dumb cuz I mean he did tell her from the get-go that he doesn't believe in marriage and she still decided to stay but at the same time if he knows that she's going to continue asking about it why doesn't he dump her and why doesn't she leave him so it's kind of hard not having an opinion about it cuz I mean their whole relationship seems like a joke tbh

Yeah true true but I'll admit it's kind of hard turning a blind eye to it when my husband gives me updates on his brother and his girl like I don't know how to tell him I honestly don't want to know and I don't care cuz I'm in don't tell me if you don't want to hear my opinion you know and I've tried to like not say anything and then he gets mad because I don't really tell him my opinion which he doesn't want to hear so if you could give me advice how I can tell him nicely just not to tell me about them?
