Is abbreviating wheelchair to ‘wc’ lowkey ableist or am I overreacting?

This question is more for fellow wheelchair users or people willing to put themselves in my shoes for a minute. Today someone text me asking a question about my wheelchair. Its someone who i talk to on a regular basis and today for whatever reason they abbreviated wheelchair to wc. This person has never used chat speak with me before. And yes, they are able bodied and work in an apartment building for the disabled. Is it weird they felt comfortable abbreviating wheelchair to wc, or am I just too sensitive? To me it almost seems a bit lowkey ableist, as if theyre trying to cover up the fact we're in a wheelchair.

There just isn’t a need to abbreviate wheelchair as far as I’m concerned but because of my life connections to those in healthcare & event planning I do know that WC is commonly used in shorthand … so it’s practicality not prejudice. Given it was typed I’d say it was just lazy and nothing else.


Meanwhile WC in my neck of the woods commonly means water closet.


in my opinion it would be a stretch to identify someone as ableist by use. Just my two cents

When I see WC right now I think World Cup but I suppose that's beside the point. When people lazily abbreviate things, I just see it as... people lazily abbreviating words, with the expectation that you still know what it means. I'm not personally able to find how it's meant to be derogatory or demeaning in any way though. I'd need examples of other words that when abbreviated magically become something insulting before I could make a connection like that.

WC in capitals is an acronym of Water Closet which is a toilet. So it is good manners to write as 'wc' as 'WC' implies it is a commode chair.

So you do realize that thats a form of ableism right, to make comments like that when you don't know a person's situation? I didn't say I was sad about being in a wheelchair. I have a literal medical condition THAT I WAS BORN WITH that prevents me from walking. I've been in a chair for a long time. I'm fine with it now.
